Emergency officials have confirmed the death of a 26-year-old construction worker who was trapped under a collapsed concrete wall for several hours Wednesday.

The incident occurred east of Toronto at a home construction site in north Whitby, where construction crews were working near a three-car detached garage.

Officials were called at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday after the garage's exterior foundation wall collapsed and trapped the man in a trench.

Fire department crews were having a difficult time accessing the victim because of debris, said Durham Regional Police Const. Elaine Otterbein.

Rescue officials said that crews have had to stabilize the ground around the walls in order to avoid any other collapses.

Heavy machinery will then be brought in to clear away the wall.

The victim hasn't been identified.
