Wayne Gretzky announced Team Canada's lineup for the World Cup of Hockey today. One prominent name missing from this list: Todd Bertuzzi.
The Vancouver Canucks' star winger was suspended after an attack on Steve Moore of the Colorado Avalanche in March. Moore was hospitalized with a fractured vertebrae.
Bertuzzi was suspended by the NHL for the remainder of the 2003-04 hockey season and must meet with league commissioner Gary Bettman to determine his eligibility for the 2004-05 season -- which might be lost to a labour disruption anyway.
"We do not have to officially put our team in until Aug. 29," Gretzky said. If Bertuzzi is reinstated and someone else isn't available, the team would consider adding him, he said.
Other players to who didn't make the cut include Paul Kariya and Alex Tanguay of the Colorado Avalanche, the Montreal Canadiens' all-star goalie Jose Theodore and Philadelphia Flyer's centre Keith Primeau.
Notable team members include Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning, a candidate for the Hart trophy as the NHL's most valuable player; the Atlanta Thrashers' Dany Heatley, who starred at the world championships; and Boston's Joe Thornton.
Fourteen of the 26-player roster also played on the Olympic champion squad in 2002. They include NHL veterans like the Pittsburgh Penguins' Mario Lemieux and the Detroit Red Wings' Steve Yzerman.
The team's goalies are Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, Ed Belfour of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Robert Luongo of the Florida Panthers.
Gretzky is the team's executive director. Kevin Lowe, the Edmonton Oilers' general manager and a former Gretzky teammate, and Steve Tambellini of the Vancouver Canucks' front office make up his management staff. Pat Quinn, coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the man who led Canada to a gold medal in the 2002 Olympics, will be behind the bench when training camp opens Aug. 19.
The World Cup of Hockey takes place from August 30 to September 14. Games will be played across Europe and North America.
