A vehicle smashed into a bus shelter in Scarborough Wednesday just after 6 a.m., sending a man who was standing inside flying through the air.
The vehicle reportedly slipped on black ice near the corner of Sheppard Ave. E. and Murison Blvd. near Neilson Rd. It lost control and smashed into the bus shelter.
For Gloria Anderson it was a very close call. She and another woman had seen the bus coming and stepped out of the shelter. That last second decision probably saved their lives.
"If it wasn't for the bus that was there ... all of us would have died," Anderson said.
She and another woman suffered only minor cuts and were shaken-up by the ordeal. They were sent home to recover.
But the collision was far more serious for one man.
"He was actually thrown when he was struck so he had more serious but not life-threatening injuries," Staff Sgt. Dave McManus told the Toronto Star.
The unnamed victim was expected to be released from hospital Wednesday afternoon.
Anderson says she believes divine intervention kept her safe.
"God, he was there," Anderson said.
Police shut down a portion of the roadway. The area was soon cleared and the road reopened to traffic.
The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries in the crash. Police said charges are unlikely to be laid.
Then later in the morning another bus shelter at Danforth Rd. and Seminole Ave. was damaged when a vehicle collided with it. In that incident one vehicle swerved to avoid a collision with another and struck the shelter.
No one was inside the shelter at the time. The female driver was taken to hospital for treatment.
