The case against a maintenance contractor charged with negligence in connection with an elevator mishap that injured five people made its way to court on Wednesday.
Lawyers representing Fujitec Canada Inc. appeared briefly at Old City Hall courts to defend five counts of violating safety requirements laid by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority last month.
Five people suffered broken bones and compression fractures when the elevator they were in plunged 50 feet to the parking garage below at the National Life Building on University Avenue in January 2006.
Investigators allege the frightening crash occurred because the elevator was low on hydraulic fluid.
Fujitec is charged with failing to inspect and examine the elevator at regular intervals, failing to repair or replace worn or defective components and failing to maintain a proper log book.
The company is facing millions of dollars in civil suits filed by the victims.
The case will return to court next month.
