A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison on Friday in connection with the stabbing death of a Toronto teen.

Rohan George pleaded guilty to manslaughter, admitting his role in the kidnapping and killing of 18-year-old Thanu Kumaran.

Court heard Kumaran and a friend were shopping at Scarborough Town Centre in January 2005 when they were assaulted by a group of men.

Kumaran reported the attack to local police and then went into hiding for about 10 days, thinking officers would put the culprits behind bars.

But when Kumaran came out of hiding, he was kidnapped by the men and then stabbed four times in the back when he showed up at the spice store he worked at.

Two of the incisions punctured Kumaran's lungs, and he died on the way to hospital, court heard.

George denies inflicting the fatal wounds, but says he was involved in the attack. None of the other co-accused have been arrested, and the one who hatched the murder plan has reportedly skipped town.

Kumaran was described as a model citizen who often worked double shifts so he could send money back to his family in Sri Lanka.

Justice Edward Then described the killing as "an utterly senseless and shocking murder ... a puerile plan for retribution."

George was originally charged with first-degree murder, but accepted a plea bargain for the lesser sentence.
