TORONTO - Ontario's Minister of Natural Resources says climate change is threatening to wipe out the province's polar bears and unleash new insect-borne diseases in southern Ontario.

David Ramsay says a new website launched by the government shows what will happen if nothing is done to stop climate change.

Under that scenario, he says the temperature will rise up to 10 degrees in northern Ontario which will essentially drive polar bears to extinction.

The weather will also warm up in southern Ontario bringing with it insects like the black-legged tick which carries Lyme disease.

Ramsay says he hopes the website and its dire predictions will raise public awareness and prompt people to do something to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmentalists say raising public awareness is important but drastic action must also be taken at the same time if we want to stop climate change.
