More than 2,000 people in the Durham region are being urged to get tested for HIV and Hepatitis after a tattoo parlour was found to be using faulty sterilization equipment.

Durham region health officials say customers may have been exposed to disease after receiving tattoos from the Longhorn Custom Bodyart Studio in Oshawa, Ont.

Health officials are urging anyone who received a tattoo or body piercing between Nov. 17, 2006, and Aug. 1 to see a doctor and be tested.

"At this time, we have no evidence of transmission of infectious diseases, but because of the potential use of non-sterile equipment, there is a risk -- which we believe to be relatively low," Ross MacEachern, Durham Region health department manager of environmental health said in a release on Friday.

A routine inspection showed the machine used to sterilize equipment had been malfunctioning since last November.

The shop closed temporarily but has since been reopened to the public after passing required tests.
