The mother of a three-year-old girl is currently being questioned by homicide investigators after the child's badly burned body was found inside the woman's Scarborough home.

Investigators were called to a residence located at 16 Ulysses Place near Midland and Finch Avenues at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday where they found the child's body.

On Saturday, an autopsy was performed on the toddler to determine the cause of death.

The identities of the mother and the child have not been released.

Next-door neighbour Arshalouise Nersessian, 51, told CTV.ca that the family was new to the neighbourhood.

"The mother was a tenant of my neighbour's," Nersessian said during a telephone interview on Saturday.

Nersessian said the neighbourhood is in shock over the toddler's death. Both mother and daughter were described as pleasant and friendly.

"She was very lovely, very sweet girl, warm-hearted and full of energy and her disappearance is really hurting us."

Nersessian noted when the child was seen around the neighbourhood, there were no signs of the child being mistreated.

"It was a great relationship, she loved her mother. She used to say, 'Mom I love you,' and it really makes me wonder how it happened," Nersessian said.

Police are still on scene at the semi-detached home, no formal charges have been laid.
