A number of residential streets are closed in south Etobicoke after a water main broke early Monday morning.
The main broke in the Islington Avenue and Queensway area around 5 a.m. and sent murky water and mud rushing into sewers, backyards and basements.
Local resident Doris Lawrence, who has lived in the area for 55 years, told CTV News that "water mains bursting all the time."
"The (insurance) company that I was with for nine years had two claims and it had nothing to do with my house, there was water breakage outside," Lawrence, 85, said Monday.
"They told me that they were cancelling my insurance because I was in a high-risk area."
Some residential streets in the area remain closed as municipal crews work to clean up the water and investigate what caused the break.
Water supply to local homes has been shut off until the break is repaired.
A 2007 study commissioned by the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario suggests almost 20 per cent of the city's water infrastructure is more than 80 years old.
Currently, at least one water main breaks every day during the winter months in Toronto.
