Toronto police say a four-year-old child was living inside a home that was being used as a marijuana grow operation.

Drug squad officers seized 763 plants from the Scarborough house, located in the Pharmacy Avenue and Ellesmere Road area, on Monday.

Police were called to the area after receiving reports of two men prowling in the backyard. The suspects were also seen on the roof.

When officers arrived, they couldn't find the men, but found evidence the home was a grow-op.

Police could see and hear people inside the home. Believing there could have been a home invasion, officers entered the house, where they found a fully operational grow-op.

A 42-year-old man and 37-year-old woman were arrested. A four-year-old girl was placed in the care of the Children's Aid Society.

The accused, who are not being named to protect the identity of the child, are charged with:

  • Producing marijuana;
  • Possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking; and
  • Theft of electricity or gas.

They were to appear at the Old City Hall courts on Tuesday.
