Environment Canada is preparing commuters to get ready for the first snowstorm of the season, with a weather warning for Toronto and several other regions in Ontario.

The storm is expected to start overnight and into Thursday morning, making the morning commute a challenge.

The bad weather is the result of a low pressure system over Missouri that is moving northeast towards southern Ontario.

Up to 10 cm is expected for Toronto though forecasters predict much of that won't stick to the ground. Up to 5 cm is expected in time for morning rush hour traffic.

Environment Canada is also warning about freezing rain and black ice on the roads as temperatures dip below the freezing mark.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Cam Woolley told CTV News motorists should keep the weather in mind and pace themselves on their way to work.

"It will be that wet, heavy, wheel-grabbing snow," he said. "The number one reason for crashes out there is because people are driving too fast for the conditions."

He offered drivers a few tips on keeping their car safe for winter:

  • Make sure your lights are clean and clear of snow
  • Top up your windshield fluid
  • Make sure windshield wipers are in good working condition
  • Get your car fitted for snow tires

"Proper winter tires could cut your stopping distance in half and quite frankly, could mean the difference between control and crash," Woolley said.

About five to 10 cm of snow already fell in northern parts of eastern Ontario throughout Tuesday night.

The largest snowfall accumulations are expected northwest of the Niagara escarpment and into the Haliburton Highlands.

In Toronto, salt trucks are gearing up for the snowfall but the city has limited access to snow plows until Dec. 1.
