A young man has died from his injuries after an east-end shooting that may have been an ambush killing.

Police believe the victim was shot while sitting in a car at a strip mall near Birchmount Road and Sheppard Avenue at about 1:20 p.m. on Friday.

The victim, believed to be about 19 years old, died after being taken to hospital with gunshot wounds to the chest and back. His identity has not been released.

One witness who lived at a townhouse across the street said she heard five gunshots. Police wouldn't say if the incident was gang related.

Tactical officers scoured the area for suspects, but no arrests were made. Investigators later found a gun inside a garbage can behind the strip mall.

Five schools in the area were locked down for a while as a precaution.

Officers cordoned off the area and closed some streets to traffic as they investigated and spoke to witnesses.

Police will review surveillance video footage from businesses in the area.

The death marks the city's 75th homicide of the year.

Anyone who may have seen anything is asked to contact police at 416-808-4200, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or go online at www.222tips.com.
