Several pets died after a massive fire tore through a veterinary clinic north of Toronto Sunday night.

Firefighters arrived on the scene just after 10 p.m. to find smoke pouring out of the back of the Thornhill Veterinary Clinic in Vaughan, Ont.

Several animals were trapped inside. Fire crews tried to get to them all but several pets couldn't be saved in time.

"Unfortunately four of the animals perished in the fire and the rest --the other ones that were rescued -- were taken to an animal clinic in the city of Toronto for further treatment," Vaughan Fire Chief Gary Verdin told CTV Toronto.

Four dogs are in good condition but a fifth is in critical condition.

Other animals that were found on the second floor of the clinic were transported to other clinics in York Region.

Fire officials believe the fire started in a clothes dryer in the basement.

The estimated damages are at $50,000.
