Residents of a Scarborough neighbourhood say they're not surprised it was speeding that caused a serious accident Saturday afternoon on Bellamy Road.

They've presented city hall with a petition asking councillors to increase speed radars in the area and decrease the speed limit.

"I've seen many accidents here, it's unbelievable," said Santino Piazza who lives in the area. "Every month, every two to three weeks, we have incidents all the time."

Rod Nicoll, another neighbour who lives near the crash site said he came rushing out when he heard the crash. He said he's constantly worried that one of these days a car is going to come crashing through his house.

"I worry about it sometimes, that a car could come right through this door," he said.

Witnesses say two cars were travelling between 80 and 100 kilometres an hour on a stretch of Bellamy Road.

An 84-year-old driver named Jack Nelson was in his vehicle making a turn at the intersection of Brimorton Drive and Bellamy Road at about 1 p.m. on Saturday when he was struck by a southbound vehicle, police said.

Emergency crews had to cut his demolished vehicle to free him. Nelson was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but they are not considered life-threatening.

"He's one tough Irishman," his wife told CTV Toronto.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the senior's car, a 25-year-old man, was also taken to hospital with a collapsed lung, police said.

Witnesses told investigators the third vehicle drove away from the scene.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Toronto police traffic services at 416-808-1900.
