NEWMARKET, Ont. - A Toronto man has been found guilty of manslaughter in the 2005 death of a pedestrian who was struck by a car on a walkway.

Shawn Plafker, 22, was originally charged with second-degree murder, but a jury found him guilty Friday of the lesser charge in the death of Sumit Kapoor, 23.

York Regional Police say officers were called to the site of the collision on Oct. 27, 2005, after receiving reports that a man had been struck by a car on a pedestrian walkway.

During the investigation, police learned the driver and the victim had met in a nearby parking lot.

Police say there was an altercation, and Kapoor attempted to run away but was pursued by Plafker in his car and struck.

Kapoor, from Vaughan, north of Toronto, died in hospital.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for March 18.
