The flag at Newtonbrook Secondary School in North York flew at half-mast Monday morning in tribute to a 15-year-old student killed in a horrific car crash the night before.

Her 17-year-old friend who was driving the car has been charged with impaired driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death. His identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police allege the car may have been speeding before it lost control.

Eugenia Migounov was killed when the car she was riding in veered onto oncoming traffic on Bathurst Street, just south of Steeles Avenue at about 9:30 p.m.

The vehicle was smashed by another car but it didn't stop until it went sailing into a bus shelter and concrete bench.

The impact hit the backseat of the car in which Migounov was sitting. She was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead soon after arriving.

Five other people were injured in the crash but they all suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Friends of the teen were seen outside their school Monday hugging in grief and covering their faces in shock over the turn of events. Many said they were too upset to speak with the media.

One young man remembered how Migounov liked to snowboard.

"She liked snowboarding, she liked dancing.....I liked her," he said, looking down.

"It's a horrible way, just a horrible way to start a week, a day..." Tom Kolin, the vice-principal of the school, told CTV Toronto. "The family...it just breaks my heart."

Kolin said crisis counsellors are at the school to help students and staff cope with the news. The administration will also speak with students at some point as well, he said.

City crews cleaning up the wreckage Monday morning said it's a tragedy that hits close to home.

"Especially when you know you've got kids the same age...it could happen to anybody's kid," said one man.

The accused teen spent the night in police custody but was granted bail Monday.
