A Toronto city councillor is pushing his colleagues at city hall to make water sprinklers mandatory in all new city-owned buildings.

Anthony Perruzza will introduce his motion before council Tuesday. The motion also asks that council formally request to the province that they change the building code to include sprinklers.

Raging fires are being blamed for killing 32 people in Ontario in February -- six of them in Toronto. The statistics show there have been more fatalities this year than what officials usually see at this time of year.

The city's fire chief says without a doubt, sprinklers and working smoke detectors could have prevented a majority of those deaths.

Currently, the province is holding consultations to discuss putting sprinklers in buildings that are three storeys or higher. However, at this point, they are not discussing putting them into homes.

Fire officials in Toronto say Vancouver is a perfect example of fire safety.

Vancouver made sprinklers mandatory in all buildings in 1990 and there has not been one accidental fire death since the law was implemented.
