Commuters who use Bathurst Street in the downtown core may want to find an alternate route over the next two months as the major thoroughfare will be ripped up for construction work.

Crews began the project of replacing the aging streetcar tracks on Tuesday, and the work is expected to last until at least mid-July, city officials say.

The construction will cause major traffic disruptions because the southbound lanes of Bathurst between St. Clair Avenue and Bloor Street will be closed to traffic.

Once the work is in full swing, only one northbound lane will be open for drivers.

The project will also close down many side streets west of Bathurst, and part of Vaughan Road will also be shut down at one point.

Bus service will be affected by the repairs, so the TTC has changed and diverted routes in the area.

Motorists caught in the Bathurst traffic backlog on Tuesday weren't thrilled to learn of the project.

"I travel this street a lot so I'm not happy about it," said one driver. "It's just going to be incredible because (there's) already really high-volume traffic on this street."
