A woman is in hospital with serious head injuries after a three-car collision in the city's east end Sunday morning.

The accident happened at 8 a.m. in the intersection of Morningside Road and McLevin Avenue.

Police say a 42-year-old woman was driving a 2003 GMC Denaii north on Morningside when she entered the intersection at McLevin and hit a Toyota Corolla travelling west.

The impact pushed the Corolla into a northwesterly direction, directly into the path of a third vehicle. The Corolla hit a VW Passat that was travelling south on Mclevin in the right turn lane.

Three people in the white Corolla were taken to hospital. A 40-year-old man suffered chest injuries and an 11-year-old chid was treated for minor injuries.

The Corolla's driver, a 20-year-old woman from Toronto, had to be cut from the wreckage. She is in critical condition at Sunnybrook hospital.

Desmond McLean, who was driving the Passat, said he saw the Corolla approaching but could do nothing to stop the car from hitting him.

"I was going south and all I heard was a bang, a massive bang," he told CTV Toronto. "I saw the white car coming towards me and I couldn't move."

Officials closed off the intersection for most of the morning while they reconstructed the crash.

Sgt. Tim Burrows told CTV Toronto police are investigating whether one of the drivers ran a red light.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at 416-808-1900.
