Two women in their 20s were killed while crossing the street in Toronto's east end early Saturday morning.

Police say the women were struck by a car while walking across Pharmacy Avenue at Arnall Avenue, south of Steeles, just after midnight.

The victims, aged 26 and 28, are both from the Toronto area. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the 49-year-old driver of the car remained at the scene and tried to help the victims, who had crossed where there were no traffic lights or a designated crosswalk.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the crash, investigators said.

Pharmacy was closed to traffic for about six hours.

Police have not released the names of the women, who are the city's 23rd and 24th traffic-related fatalities of the year.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to call Traffic Services at 416-808-1900.
