Toronto police are looking for a young man who tried to abduct a three-year-old girl from her home in the city's east end.

The girl was playing in her bedroom on Saturday night when a man reached through the open window of the ground floor apartment and tried to grab her, police said.

The woman's mother walked into the room and saw the abduction attempt. She screamed, scaring off the suspect.

The man jumped into the back seat of a waiting car, which drove off, police said.

The incident happened in the Sumach and Gerrard Street area just before 10 p.m.

Police describe the suspect as:

  • Between 22 and 25 years old
  • Dark brown skin
  • Clean shaven with long face
  • He was wearing a black baseball cap, white T-shirt, baggy blue jeans and a white belt.

The car involved is described as a newer model black vehicle, possibly a Toyota. There is no description of the car's driver.

Police say they are reviewing surveillance camera footage in the area.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call police at 416-808-5100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
