Charges have been laid against a 43-year-old woman in Toronto's first cycling fatality of the year.

Police say the 57-year-old male victim was riding his bicycle east on Eglinton Avenue, passing a line of parked cars on the south side of the street, at about 1:10 p.m. on May 22.

The driver of one of the vehicles opened the car door in front of the cyclist, who struck the door.

The victim lost control of his bicycle, fell onto the road and was struck by a truck, police said.

The man was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries. He is the 20th traffic fatality of the year, but the first person to be killed while cycling.

The 43-year-old driver has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with opening a vehicle door improperly.

Police have not released the names of the victim or the accused.
