The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating an armed robbery on Highway 407 Monday afternoon.

A motorist was waiting to make a left turn at the Weston Road exit when a blue Dodge van carrying three people pulled up beside him. Two people jumped out of the car while the driver stayed behind the wheel.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander was then robbed at gunpoint. A car window was smashed and a black bag containing a "significant amount" of money was taken from the front seat, OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley told CTV.ca.

The driver is a business owner and he was on his way to deposit the cash made over the weekend to a bank on Weston Road when he was robbed.

Woolley said he's not ready to speculate on whether the man was targeted.

"There's a strong likelihood but that's part of our investigation," he said.

The area was not busy at the time and Woolley said officers are still trying to determine whether there were any witnesses to the incident.

In the meantime police are reviewing video taken by cameras along the 407 for clues.

So far, police don't have a clear description of the suspects.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the OPP at 905-841-5777 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
