A 20-year-old man is dead after drowning at Wasaga Beach late Saturday afternoon.

Strong winds blew the man and the dingy he was lying on out deep into the water but within the marked swimming area.

The man, who reportedly did not know how to swim, jumped from the dingy and was pulled under the water. Police say they don't know why the man decided to abandon the dingy.

People on the beach heard frantic cries of help from the man's friend who was also out in the water with him.

The victim was pulled to shore by his friend and two citizens. When police arrived, they found paramedics and a citizen performing C.P. R. on him.

The man, who police say is from the Toronto area, was rushed to a hospital in Collingwood but he was soon pronounced dead.

Police are not publicly releasing the man's name but they are urging any witnesses to call the Huronia West OPP detachment at 1-705-429-3575.
