Flags at Ottawa City Hall were lowered Monday to honour the life of former mayor Marion Dewar, who passed away in a Toronto hospital after suffering a serious fall in that city over the weekend.

Her family members, including son Paul who is the incumbent NDP MP for Ottawa-Centre, travelled to be by her bedside.

"This woman, my mother, taught me everything," said Paul, when he was elected in 2006.

Giving boat people new life

Dewar was mayor of Ottawa from 1978 to 1985. One of her many accomplishments included a program called Project 4000, where she arranged for Vietnamese boat people to relocate in the capital.

"The look in their eyes of just almost days, but a sense of hope -- I thought maybe it's all worth while. Maybe this is what this job is all about," Dewar said about the project back in 1979.

At the Mekong Restaurant in Ottawa, owner Dennis Luc -- who came to Canada as one of those 4,000 people -- remembered Dewar Monday for what she did to help him find a new life.

"My heart is still very beating. All morning, I cannot concentrate on my work," he said.

"I'm very appreciate what she did for the boat people. Have a chance to have a good life here in a beautiful country - in Canada."

Dedication to the capital

Dewar, who went on to become a Member of Parliament and president of the federal New Democratic Party, was remembered compassionately by long-time political veterans who paid tribute to her life and commitment to the citizens of Ottawa on Monday.

"We don't simply mourn the passing of one of the bravest women I've ever known. We also celebrate her groundbreaking career and her spirit and especially her joy for life," said former NDP leader Ed Broadbent.

"She will be deeply missed by the people of Ottawa and all who had the good fortune to know and work with her," Liberal Leader Stephane Dion said in a statement.

"As mayor of Ottawa, she made it easier for citizens to become involved in municipal decision-making, improved access to low-cost housing and child care services . . . Today the city is a stronger, more inclusive place because of her leadership."

On the municipal stage, Mayor Larry O'Brien also paid tribute to Dewar and her dedication to the capital and its residents.

"(She was) certainly one of the most beloved mayors the city's had. She was a committed activist," O'Brien told CTV Ottawa Monday afternoon.

Marion Dewar was 80 years old. Residents are welcomed to sign a book of condolences at Andrew Haydon Hall at Ottawa City Hall daily from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

I once shared her political beliefs, but have become estranged from them, and believed that she was wrongheaded on practically every issue.

However, this is very sad and I send my regrets to her family.

Jerry Toews
That may be the most insensitive comment I have ever heard at a time like this. Agree or disagree, this is a time to remember her accomplishments and mourn her loss. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the Dewar family.

Marika Morris
Marion Dewar was a great Canadian. She was involved in many community intiatives over her lifetime until the very end. She was compassionate and active on promoting peace, well-being, interfaith dialogue, and social and economic equality. My deepest condolences to her family.

Sam Sey
Marion gone is a big loss for humanity and humankind
May you rest in peace.
Sam

Mary Sue Evans
She was a wonderful family friend and I will miss her deeply. My sympathies to all the Dewars.

Joan Lalonde
Marion was an exemplary woman who lived her faith to the fullest. She was a caring person and one to be emulated. Our sympathies to her family

Jeff W
My first memories of Marion Dewar were when she was the Public Health Nurse at Earl of March Secondary School in Kanata (1970). I spent many a Grade 10 history class hiding in the nurses office - funny how I was so sick just at that time. Marion was a very kind and warm hearted woman who went on to express that as Mayor of Ottawa.

Jeff W
Make that 1971. I guess I missed math classes too.

Ed Lee
Marion has indeed left a mark pro or con on Ottawa society..
May she rest in peace

Anu Bose
She contributed greatly to Ottawa society whatever her politics. It is a very difficult time for her son who must campaign in the general election. RIP Ms Dewar

Anthony Salloum
Ms. Dewar will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to public service. She was an inspiration to so many, particularly women.

My deepest sympathy to her family. May they take some comfort in the knowledge that their mom's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Valorie Preston
Marion Dewar's spirit and energy touched so many people that she will never die. Though I did not see her often in the last few years she was often in my thoughts. My condolences to the whole Dewar family and to Ottawa: the city will miss the power of her belief in good.

Marion Dewar was a light to guide us all, both in what she accomplished and in how she worked. She worked with and for, not against. she showed us what one person of determination and conviction can do. A woman of compassion, ability, and courage. Whatta woman! With her passing, a light has dimmed in Ottawa..

Lynn Noel
My deepest condolences to the Dewar Family. Marion Dewar inspired me to be a better woman and to always work to make a difference in my community. From working with newcomers in a public housing community, to serving homeless women and children and today serving special children in need. My heart is sad but my memories of her spirit are all joyous. Rest In Peace dear lady and THANK YOU for your many, many years of service.

Kirsten Partanen
I was privileged to work with Marion Dewar these past two years on the Ottawa Network for Children. I was struck by her ability as she co-chaired the meetings to keep the children the focus, her huge heart and her very firm handshake. This is a huge loss to the community. She will be greatly missed. However, her work, in so many areas will live on as a testament to a life well lived.

A. Craig
Everytime when I saw Marion Dewar`s name on the ballot I always put an X beside her name whether she ran to be elected for a federal or provincial seat and in the municipal government. I always voted for her. She was an incredible person and cared for everyone. The first thing the city must honour is to rename Hunt Club Road to Marion Dewar Road to respect her thoughtfulness.

Beth Evans and Family
Mrs. Dewar was a dear family friend and will be missed very much. She always had a wonderful smile. Our sympathies to all the family.

Larry Hill
Marion has touched so many lives so deeply that her spirit will live on in Ottawa for eons.
She was one of my most cherished mentors and friends.

Marion dewar; "grandma yoda" such an amazing, strong woman. i'll always remember the time at the cottage with her. and the oatmeal she made us. my love goes to the family. <3 may angels lead you in.

Suzanne Aubertin
I had the chance to work under and alongside Marion for a few of my 7 year incursion into federal politics - a while ago - and I only have fond memories. I remember her as a force who could be clear and motivate simply with her resolve and structured yet simple approach. An active, purposeful and successful icon of our history, a person of strength I will long remember and miss. My sympathies to her family and close ones.
Suzanne

Marion was a powerful, kind, compassionate woman. She inspired me to achieve all that I could be as a young woman. I have now passed that on to my daughter. Thank you Marion. My deepest condolences to her family.

Deborah Mahoney
I met Marion Dewar for dinner when I was a member of a group called The Youth Council for the Disabled. It was a wonderful time. She was such a gracious host and very attentive when she was asked questions by everyone in "my group". She was a very soft spoken person but was passionate when it came to causes and opinions that she held so strongly. I will indeed miss her.

Andrew Grant
When starting to be a lector at my parish, St. Basil's, we had to attend a training meeting. The one other person there was Ms. Dewar, she introduced herself to us and told us to call her Marion, everytime after when we saw her she remembered our names which amazed me. You could feel the love she had for Ottawa. Rest in Peace Marion.

Dan
Marion Dewer forced me to leave my home town of Ottawa because she gave the Boat People hiring priority for all the jobs. I moved to Calgary and never went back. She was just another politician willing to sell out Canadians for a little power.

Dan
If you don't want to hear the truth and just wanted people to lie about how wonderful and perfect she was please say so so people wont waste their time reading the comment section or writing comments. If it's just propaganda like the rest of your news items you're looking for why don't you just write them yourself.

Mary Anne Wilson
Marion Dewar had a big influence on my life. I lived in Centretown during her tenure as Mayor, was mid-way through university and remember vividly an all candidates meeting featuring Marion and Pat Nicol. As a criminology student, government involvement in social issues/justice on a local and provincial level was foremost in my area of interest and Marion’s activism was pivotal in the formation of many of the views I hold and value today.

To the Dewar family - I want you to know that I am where I am today because of the contribution and leadership of your mother in the area social services in Ottawa. My life after university did not go directly forward into a career as I had hoped and imagined. For a number of years I lived in subsidized housing, received financial assistance for recreational activities at my local community centre, at times got food from the Foodbank, got help for my addiction, took advantage of adult education, benefited from the emphasis to keep public transportation costs low and I still benefit from the services of my community health centre. Today it’s entirely different - a complete turnaround. I owe much of that to living in a city and within a community that has social services that can be turned to in times of need and an environment where someone like me is met with educated understanding from both bureaucrats and helping professionals.

God bless you and your family. Marion Dewar, I will remember you always.

T Cao
Yes, She gave the boat people new life and I'm one of them. We always remember you, Marion Dewar.
Our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Dewar's family.

Carol Myles, Director, Municipal Retirees Organiza
On behalf of its 14,000 members, the Municipal Retirees Organization of Ontario would like to express deepest condolences to the Dewar family. While in office in Ottawa and thereafter, Marion was a champion to municipal workers for her sense of fairness and equity to those at all levels. Her personal integrity and social conscience will always be remembered. Marion will stand out as a role model for all those involved in political life. She will be truly missed.

Stephen Brunette, Izmir, Turkey
As Ed Lee said, good or bad, Ms. Dewar has left her mark on the city, and we are better off for having her. As a 11 year old living in Ottawa at the time of the Vietnamese refugees arriving, it filled me with pride and hope that she with others helped organize this incredible feat to bring them to a welcoming city and safe home. Now I live in Turkey, and the tolerance to all faiths and ethnic groups she lived and showed daily has made me a better person, and understanding of all peoples of the earth. May God be with you and rest in peace.

Steven Tompa
I remember being around eight years old and going to a kids and youth forum at old city hall and being shown around the mayors office . I had My picture in the paper her showing me the Chain of Office which she was wearing that day. Never will i forget her kindness and willingness to talk to a plain kid about her job and my thoughts about the city.

Hong Phan
Marion Dewar is an extraordinary and exceptional person who has made history through her own dynamic and meaningful living example. As we have a chance to be near her in the flesh, we discover even more of her greatness and legend. There is 'something' inside this great lady that radìates outward to touch all of us and make us feel so close to her, so peaceful inside our soul even on first contact. That 'something' is her natural friendliness, open mind and total immersion with the people whether new or old acquaintance. And her love, care and concerns for people, especially for our freedom-loving Vietnamese community have manifested in the way she amicably and gentle treats other, her smart conversations and her utmost patience in listening and sharing her experience and wisdom with all around her...
Vietnamese Canadians have just lost a great benefactor, a true heroine, and a tireless freedom fighter with unmatched winning tract records. The world has just lost an exception citizen without equal in both talent and virtuosity.
Hong Phan, Calgary, AB

Ramesh Fernando
I was only a child when Ms. Dewar was mayor, but she was a fine lady who actually cared about the community and wanted to serve the public and citizens of Ottawa. While I don't agree with NDP's solutions to poblems Ms. Dewar represented the type of politician who was concerned with local issues, national issues and global issues of poverty etc. She was a first class lady. My heart goes out to her family and I wish them condolences.
