One man is dead after a two-alarm blaze in west-end Toronto.

Firefighters were called to a residence on Dundas Street in the Junction at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Two people lived on the main floor of the residence but one person managed to escape the flames with minor burns, a fire official said at the scene.

A man was found at the back of the residence without any vital signs. They managed to carry him out of the residence and administer CPR but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The heat was intense, the fire official said, and it took firefighters until 11 p.m. to put out the fire.

"It was a very hot fire. Our crews that were fighting it found that their pass alarms that go off with excessive heat were activated but they fought the fire and worked their way to the back," said Bob O'Hallarn, the division commander.

The building was a store that was converted into a home. There were fire detectors in place but officials say they are still investigating whether or not they were working.

The fire marshal's office is investigating the blaze.
