TORONTO - The president of the Canadian Auto Workers says the union has "no interest" in the idea of new worker concessions for the struggling auto sector.
Ken Lewenza said today "labour rates are not the problem" when it comes to the issues facing the automakers.
He noted that in the last set of negotiations, the CAW agreed to concessions that will save the Big Three $900 million over three years.
Lewenza commented as the Big Three automakers plead for a government bailout to help them weather a crippling sales slump.
The union leader says he objects to the term "bailout," because any government aid would be an investment in the economy and Canadian jobs.
Published reports Thursday said that Chrysler Canada has asked for $1-billion in aid, making it the only Canadian branch of the Big Three to make a specific dollar request.
