A city woman is dead and her husband is being treated for apparent self-inflicted stab wounds following a domestic violence incident.

Staff Sgt. Daryle Gerry of the Toronto Police Service's 12 Division told ctvtoronto.ca on Saturday that officers were called to a home on Strathnairn Ave. shortly after 7 a.m.

That location is just to the northeast of Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue West.

Inside the home, they found a critically wounded woman and a man. She would eventually die of her stabbing injuries, he said.

"The male is being treated for what appear to be self-inflicted stab injuries, and the homicide squad is investigating," Gerry said.

The husband and wife are both in their 50s, he said.

The woman is Toronto's 69th homicide victim of 2008.

Saturday marks the 19th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, in which a troubled gunman murdered 14 female engineering students.

Since then, the day has been used to commemorate all violence against women.
