TORONTO - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume a brand of frozen Leatherjacket fish because it may be contaminated with ciguatera toxin.

The recall affects School of Fish brand frozen Leatherjacket sold in packages with the production code of H104 and UPC codes UPC 8 74718 00074 0 or 8 74718 00073 3.

The agency says there have been two reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the product, which has been imported from China and distributed in British Columbia and Ontario.

The agency says fish contaminated with ciguatera toxin may not look or smell spoiled. The toxin is not destroyed by cooking.

Symptoms of ciguatera poisoning include vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, itching of the skin, and central nervous system dysfunction, which often includes hot and cold inversion - that is cold foods or drinks feel hot, a hot shower feels cold.

The importer, Frobisher International Enterprise Ltd., based in Delta, B.C. is voluntarily recalling the affected product.
