WIARTON, Ont. - Wiarton Willie will have to go it alone this year when he emerges from his lair on Groundhog Day.

The town of South Bruce Peninsula, Ont., tried auctioning off the "Groundhog experience" on eBay with a reserve bid of just under $750.

Economic development officer Danielle Mulasmajic says no bids came in before the auction closed Friday.

She blames the economic downturn and says the town will try another auction in a few years.

The experience was successfully auctioned off last year to a Calgary family for $1,700.

It included accommodation for three nights and a front row seat for the Wiarton Willie prediction on Feb. 2, along with participation in all the weekend events.
