I started to watch your broadcasts in 1974 when I was 21 and moved back to Toronto, after graduation, to study to become a teacher.
I remember when your child was born during that time. My room mate and I wondered if we would ever teach him?her?
And was that you modelling in the Sears catalogue?
When I started work, your weather report was what I needed to hear to know what to wear for yard duty or even if there would be school at all.
I remember when Scruffy died and I cried. And I was impressed by your heart when you wept as well.
All these years I've made it a point to seek the weather information and advise that I require, from my familiar friend Dave.
My schedule doesn't allow me to sit down for the entire newscast, but I always keep CTV on so I can run in from the kitchen to watch you.
You are right when you say that media people become like family to their viewers, but only if, like you, they are honest, kind and share a part of themselves.
I will miss you for you, and for the lovely associations and familiarity you bring when so much is becoming increasingly unfamiliar.
I, too, have reached retirement age and will soon bid my work good-bye.
Very best wishes on your retirement, whatever form that may take and however that may look.

‘Twas the weather in which he did crave
From the sun to the clouds
He gave the forecast to the crowds
And writing backwards was totally brave!
From Scarborough to |Bolsover he ran
Tom & Antwon gave him a hand
But distance is no match
Unless he hits an icy patch
Then he’ll get here whenever he can.
There once was a guy named Dave
Who was the ultimate fan fave
His weather was right
His smile was bright
And he took much less than he gave.

We would like to drop a line to express our gratitude for all the many years that you have been there giving us the numerous weather forecasts and weather warnings and your great humor. Dave, you have been watching out for us and giving us so many heads up in the weather fore castings. For all the many years that you have been our weather man, we would just like to say Thanks and Congrats on 48 wonderful years!! I have been watching you, since I was a 12-13 yr old kid. I remember the days when my mom would always say at 6 pm "ok, everyone, Dave is coming on with the weather “Let’s all be quiet now" and us kids all 6 of us would gather around the television. At that point it was a black and white TV. As the years progressed we got the color TV and your face would just always be there. it's like you're a part of our family.
Truly, you are an icon to us even today.. and I would like like to say.. "What an awesome job, Dave!!! You will always be my weather man.!
My husband & I would like to wish you a wonderful retirement and many sunny days ahead in your many travels We will miss you always and enjoy seeing you come on TV during these last 60 days.. and look forward to your special events that you will be on T.V for.
Again.. Thank you for the many years of wonderful stories, weather information, and all round good fun!!
Carol & Doug Wells Ajax, Ontario
Oh. P.S. you may have known my mother.. Norma Williamson, She worked at CTV for awhile, in the 70's. I'm her oldest

I am happy for you and sad for us as listeners...you ARE the best weather specialist bar none. My daughter (now 21) and I loved to watch you and you will be missed. Some folks cannot be replaced..and that would be you. All the very best on your well deserved, hopefully golf filled retirement.

I have been a fan favourite of yours since I was a kid in the late 70's early 80's. I have fully enjoyed your friendly banter with the others on the desk, your ability to make weather understandable, your uncanny ability to write and draw backwards, and your professionalism. I will miss you. I'm writing from Hamilton, and nobody here can match your ability and skill at weather reporting.
God bless you Dave!

I just watched the 6pm news to learn of your soon to be retirement. I can't say I am shocked but like many people I am sad to hear. There are many things that people pass from generation to generation that become better over time. I was lucky because my parents passed you to me and now I have passed you on to my children(12, 8 & 6). We all wait to see if you are going to give us a snow day in Orillia, so I don't have to drive the school bus and the kids don't have to go to school. So far you haven't given us one but thats okay. Thank you for your knowledge and entertainment and best of all your SMILE!!! All the very best to you and keep Smiling!!!
Thanks,
Cheryl Lahay
In snowy Orillia, although not enough to cancel the buses!!!

By now I'm sure that you have had hundreds, if not thousands, of letters and messages from people telling you what you "always being there" has meant to them. A definite trust and comfort level. But I just wanted to thank you for an incident that occured one time when my mother was working at an answering service in the early 1980's. One day she came home all excited because she had taken a message from her favourite, Dave Devall. She couldn't stop talking about how kind and funny he had been while talking to her. It made her very happy that someone she admired on televisiion for so long had turned out to be the "good guy" that she believed him to be. She would often mention that conversation over the years whenever Dave Devall came on TV.
I am sure that it was no big deal to you because you have done things like that countless times before and since. But it meant a lot to my mom. And to her kids.
She passed away in 1987 but every time that I have seen you on TV since then, I remember the time you made my Mom's day.
I just wanted to say thank you, not only for all your weather reports, but for the nice memories of my mother that you have inspired ever since.
Happy retirement, you've earned it!

No offence to Tom Brown or the other weather people on CFTO news because they do try their best; but, their chemistry is not there with Christine, Ken or even Lance.
All the best with your retirement and thanks for putting feelings or humour into the weather.

I want to thank you for all the years you have served our community. As a young boy in the early 70's, I was briefly up for adoption and was featured on Family Finder and met you up in Agincourt. Between that chance meeting, and watching you write with both hands frontward and backward, has shown not only me, but an entire community at large how much of a gifted person you are.
I wish you a long and happy retirement.
Thank you.

We too have watched your entertaining weather forcasts on CFTO since day one. I was wondering if you remember this one. Roughly in 1969-1971, I worked in Eaton's at Yorkdale. As a Ladies Sportswear Salesperson, I was invited to a fashion show in the showroom under the restaurant near Eaton's Imagine my surprise as (I think it was Norma Wildgoose) the Fashionista for Yorkdale announced a special celebrity model for that evening--you. You sure looked dapper in whatever you wore. I will never forget that evening.
Sorry to hear of your impending retirement, but we wish you all the best and a long tome to enjoy all of the memories you have made for all of us.
Enjoy your next 50 plus years,

I must say that I cried when it was announced today that you are retiring. I have grown up watching you do the weather on Cfto/CTV. As Christine said, we all knew this day would come someday, but we will miss you very much. I always look forward to see what you will draw on the glass after your report. I'm glad they announced your retirement this early to give us all time to get used to the idea of you retiring before you actually do.
Thanks for all the many great years of great weather reports Mr Devall. Thanks for your warm smile and caring way you did the weather.
You deserve all the happiness in the world and I hope you have a great retirement.
Yours truly,

The reason I have watched CTV is for their professionlism and most of all for you, and whatever face you would draw on the weather.
I grew up with "Dave" and his cool weather eyes, and his umbrella fingers. His love for flying and the history of flight.
When I told my daugher that "Dave Devall" was retiring, she said "who" as soon as I said the umbrella man, or the eyes through "cool". She knew who I was talking about. From a fan Dave, all the best in you in your retirement. You will truly be missed! I don't know who will be able to fill your shoes. Please visit CTV sometimes for your fans!

Eating our dinner while watching CTV news at 6 will never be the same without our favourite weatherman. Bolsover should consider themselves very lucky to have you as a resident. We wish you all the best in your retirement but, we would very much like to see you make appearances now and then to know how you are doing as you Christine, Ken, Lance ,Tom etc. truly are like family. It is very refreshing to see the authentic friendship between members of the news team and hope they never stop joking or poking fun at each other which by the way is what we always look forward to. So Dave, be prepared for retirement: retired relatives are always saying to us they are so busy now they don't know how they ever found time to work prior to retirement!
Sincerely yours,
Bev & Joe

I was so upset when I heard that you were retiring.
I'm 23 years old and ever since I was a 5 years old I can remember watching you do the weather on CTV News. You were always my favourite TV personality with your drawings and your always upbeat attitude. I used to watch you after Kindergarten class with my mom.
To this day, you are the only one I will watch for the weather. I hope you enjoy retirement, I know I for sure will always remember watching you.

I am in shock that you are finally retiring. I have watched you on CFTO/CTV since you first joined the station. The best was back when you did the weather on the screen and being able to write backwards. I am sure that those that have watched you all these years or part thereof, will truly miss you. You are an absolute ICON in the weather world and I will sure miss you. Good Luck in whatever you decide to do. Happy Retirement and all the best in your future endeavours.

My husband and I have often watched you and wondered why you hadn't retired yet. But, then we decided that it must be because you love your job so much. And, it shows - it's not many in this world who are lucky enough to find a job that fits them to a T. You were blessed and in turn you blessed us.
Tonight on the air, either Ken or Lance said that you're all like family. We feel like you're part of our family because you enter our home almost every night. I feel like I should set a place for you at the supper table.
Right now we are wintering in Texas but we still watch the forecasts with great interest (thanks to modern technology!) You keep us posted as to what is happening at home.
Several years ago we saw you having lunch with your sister at the old Commercial Hotel in Lakefield. I wanted to approach you just to say hello but I didn't want to interupt your lunch.
Dave, enjoy your retirement - you have well earned it. We will miss you but we'll look forward to your visits back to the station. I'm sure every one else will too.

We met at the Queen's Own Rifle's Band Concert last April and I was wondering then when you'd retire (it's been 10 yrs for me). Congratualtions on a yeoman career and may you enjoy your retirement as much as you do in your dealings with people. I'm glad I saw your announcement live tonight - I would have felt "left out" if I had missed it.
Best wishes to you and your wife.

A voice from your distant past...I was the first director at CFTO to put you on the air in 1961 - on Nightbeat News at 6:00 pm., using the large plastic screen on wheels for your reverse writing. I remember the trouble we had finding a suitable crayon to use on the shiney surface that did not break in two!
If you recall, my father, Rai Purdy, was the first program director at CFTO.
When color came to the station, I produced the first computer animation in Canada - promos for the CFTO News, Weather and Sports. We shot you in various locations around the station with black & white sills, and hand-colored the photos. I still have them in my files.
Have great memories working with you.
All the best in your retirement.

Dave was volunteering at a fundraiser along highway 48 near Beaverton (he was flipping burgers for Ronald McDonald House).
His genuine charm and abundant enthusiam were as strong as his smile that day. He took the time to greet people on their way in the door, and did the rounds to wish everyone well on their way off again.
He was also good enough to give us 3 days of sunshine at the cottage - what a guy!
Dave is among a rare breed of Canadian News Icons whose presence on our televisions has formed a strong part of the "Canadian Experience".
Dave Devall has left a permanent mark on the way we look at the weather, and the way we look at ourselves as Canadians.
It has been a pleasure having Dave drop by our living room each evening, and keeping us ready for the elements outside of our doors.
On behalf of my entire family, we want to wish Dave all the best, and hope he finds the wind at his back and sunshine on the horizon.
Best regards,

When I first landed as an immigrant in Toronto, it was in the middle of winter where all trees were naked, there was an ice storm in Quebec and cold. I was so afraid that we might starve to death as no vegetation was visible in this particular season but when I started watching CTV News I learned how to read temperature, directions, and how to dress-up for such season. I came from Dubai where winter is 15 degrees centigrade and summer is 50 degrees centigrade. Watching CTV News was a routine for us every night. It's was part of our daily life. We tuned in for the news and mostly for weather conditions. We look forward to be informed and to be entertained by your humors. We enjoyed watching you in the TV. At times when you're away we miss you a lot but we know someday you'll be back. We continue viewing CTV despite you're away because we knew the others will do good job. Anwar and Tom in the beginning talks too fast and we can't make out what they say but lately Anwar talks slowly and very clear. We like his deliberation. Tom has to slow down as he talk like the guys in auction sale. Otherwise, CTV is the best news caster. I like the professional looks of the crew especially your's truly DAVE DEVALL. He looks charming, neat, respectable and sexy. We wish him all the best. I agree with him it's time to enjoy simple things in life like smelling the roses, gardening, watching the sunrise and sunset. These are the magnificent treasures from God. My family will miss you a lot. Please tune in once in a while when you are free.

I have been watching you give us the weather for more than 40 years. My dad started watching CTV when he and my mum first came to Canada from the UK.
As I got older, and started flying with the air cadet program/Canadian Forces, I relied on "Dave's" forecast to schedule my flying days and I rarely flew on lousy weather days.
It was around Christmas 2008 that I mentioned to my wife that it will be a sad day when you retire and that I thought it would be this year. You will be missed, not only for your forecast but for the enjoyment and added quality you bring to the CTV news team.
I hope I have the opportunity to meet you somewhere within the flying community to thank you in person.

As a teen growing up in Toronto I started watching CFTO news in my parents home and always enjoyed seeing Dave doing his backward writing. As I married and started a family the tradition of watching the 6 PM news continued. By the late 80's we moved out of the GTA to Brantford Ont. Our cable company could not provide CFTO but rather the affiliate in Kitchener. That was not good enough for us. I called the cable company to complain and was not satisified with the response . They were then instructed to remove their equipment from our new home and we purchased satellite coverage. Two main reasons were CFTO News to see Lance Brown and of course Dave.Whenever we knew a winter storm was coming we always said "Better watch Dave". Our daughter has grown up with a huge interest in weather and lives to take photos of storms and weather events, and at one time did consider a career in meteorology.Could that have been the nightly report from Dave that inspired her? Now almost 40 years later as we grow closer to retirement we still watch the news at 6. We will miss seeing you in our home but wish you a great retirement. Thanks for the memories and God Bless as you enjoy a well deserved retirement.

However, it hasn't just been the weather that I recall: I watched the program you did with the Children's Aid Society, helping to place children in adoptive homes. You were always so good with the children, bringing out their personalities. It was obvious how much you cared - children see through phoniness.
My only personal encounter with you was seeing you out at Horseshoe Valley about 1983 or 1984 - I was too shy to speak to you, but you smiled at me and said, "Hello". No big memorable encounter but just showed your friendliness.

We moved to Toronto in 1967 from New Brunswick, and we have faithfully watched CFTO tv from day1 . Your informative as well as inovative way to deliver your forcasts both good and bad were always entertaining. As a child, I loved the way you used the chalk with your backwards writing, but as the years went by, I came to trust your forcasts more as a friend than a "weatherman". I wish you weren't leaving, but you have earned and deserve your upcoming retirement. Enjoy your family, your golf game, and calm skies for your flights. Wishing you all the best in your retirement. They might bring in new forecasters, but you will never be replaced. Thank you for your years of service.

We were just watching the 12:00 news and heard you were retiring. We are very sad to see you go. yOU HAVE BEEN PART OF OUR FAMILY TOO. We have been watching CTV WEATHER since 1966!!! and we always tuned in to the news just because YOU were reporting. You are a MAINSTAY of CTV. You WILL be MISSED GREATLY. Your humour, unique ambidexterous skills, and knowledge of the weather is unlike any other. You obviously enjoyed your work. THANK YOU FOR YOUR LONG YEARS OF SERVICE. STAY WELL. Hope you have a wonderful retirement. I saw you at a Richmond Hill graduation ceremony back in the 70's and noticed how neat and professional you looked, even when not on TV. Although we don't want you to retire, we have to respect your choice. We will miss you.
I move to Canada in 1999. From that time, I love to watch CTV News especially at 6pm and 11:30pm. I enjoy your family/funny style and let me feel the warm. Every night I have to watch your weather news/forecast before I go to sleep. After your retirement, I believe I have to take time to get used to the "No Dave in the News" situation.
Anyway, All the best to your retirement! May God Bless You and Your Family! Please come to visit CTV News occasionally, so that we can see you again.

We are all very sad to see you leave. The 6’oclock CTV news will never be the same without you. I have grown up watching your smiling face every evening for 25 years. I have never missed the 6 o'clock news. No matter where I was, I always made it home on time to watch it. I grew up watching you with my parents and I’m really dishearten to know that when I have children of my own, Mr. Dave Devall will no longer be there to make them smile with his drawings...The drawings on the board, the letters, the eyes with O’ that was the highlight of the weather, any weather...even bad news. You made watching ctv news fun and exciting.
You are a legend and a great person. We all love you very much and deeply saddened to see you leave, but I wish you a world of happiness. Good luck with everything else you have planned, and best wishes.

I have literally watched you my whole life. ( I am 53) I can remember sitting in front of the black and white TV and trying to figure out how you could possibly learn to write backwards! Later in life I had a son who unfortunatley was hospitalize for a very long time, and in 1991 was a featured child on the telethon. Dave did the commentary on the tapped portion of his story. Chris has always watched Dave with a special place in his heart. He is turning 20 this year. When he heard your announcement yesterday he came running to tell us. You have been at CTV as long as I have lived and I have only watched you for as long as I have lived here (ON.) I Have lived here for 29 years now and I watched you most nights.
First off, I want to compliment on you on the fact that you aged well. You always chose your clothes well and you look good in most of them (except maybe the color black.) Most of all, your weather segment is always clear and very informative. I do so apprecaite your weather segment and made sure I catch it even if I don't watch the entire newscast.
I knew you were preparing to leave when I started not seeing you on the late night news and other weather forecast persons came on in place of you (Anwar is okay, the new lady is dismal because she is unclear and often confusing to listen to.)
So here is to you Dave for all the fond memories and for being the wonderful weather person that you are and will always be!
Your fan,

We are Brian and Lori Smith from Orangeville. Perhaps you remember our email exchanges with you several years ago regarding our poor luck weather-wise every time we went camping. The weather became a joke every time we set up a tent - 62mm of rain, roads washed out, tornado warnings and in the southern States hurricane warnings. That trend continues although usually we only set up a tent in the backyard for our teenaged daughter now. We watched the show last night (as always) and as understandable that it is for you to leave we are very sorry to see you go. It just won't be the same without you. We wish you the best in retirement and look forward to seeing your cameo appearances. Best wishes to you and your family.

Dave, I am going to miss you terribly! Anwar Knight is good; the new girl, forgive me, I can't recall her name now, looks like she will be good too, but there is no one like you. Your ambidexterity is so - to use my son's word - "sick" which means cool. Your simple style of giving your viewers the forecast is always refreshing in comparison to those "young uns" on other channels who indulges in TMI - Too Much Information - and baffle us with words we are not use to. We just want to know how cold or hot it's going to be and how much snow we can expect and you deliver every time.
You are the epitome of a true Canadian: a gentleman and a scholar - in the art of the weather - which as you know, is Canada's favorite past-time (hockey can't come close to it!)
You will truly be missed. And Dave, you still have many years ahead of you. I look forward to seeing you on your special visits to CTV after April.
HAPPY RETIREMENT!!

I have known and worked with Dave for around 15 years, he is truly one of the most funny and generous guys you ever will meet in the entertainment industry.I always loved shooting visuals for his weather report because Dave Devall always gives credit where credit is due. One way he does this for camera guys is by mentioning their name when he runs the vis they shoot. This was always a big kick for me. Dave is the cameraman's pal!
I recall one time Dave and I went down to watch a Leafs game (he's a huge LEAF fan) I couldn't help smiling as the fans at the game treated him like he was a ROCK STAR. Forget Springsteen Dave is the BOSS!
Thanks and best wishes kiddo.

We arrived in Canada from South Africa in 1975. You have been our weatherman for all this time.
CFTO News was Harvey Kirk, Lloyd Robinson and yourself.
Our 3 children were fascinated by your ambidextrous writing and over the years you soft spoken delivery of the weather has made many "calms before storms"
Best wishes on your retirement- we will certainly miss you!!

I'm only 16 but i've been watching you since... well I can't remember! It's been that long. My favorite part of your segment when I was a kid was the Umbrella, Shovel, COOL and COLD that you would draw. When I heard of your retirement at the end of the show my heart went out to you and all the work you've done over the years!
You will always be a part of the newscast even when you're gone. All the best in the years to come!

I just heard the sad news that you are retiring :(
I just wanted to say that I have been watching your weather forcasts for years. My dad and I talk about you often. It's amazing how you have learned all the new technology over the years. I know it's hard to learn new things. Anyway, you are the best weatherman I've seen; the others are okay, but you are the best and I will surely miss you. I'm glad it's not for another few months. People like me need time to get used to it. And I'm glad you said you'll be back from time to time to visit and give the weather. Something to look forward to. Watching the show last night about all your accomplishments and looking back on past episodes made me think that you are like that famous raindeer "you'll go down in history"
All the best to you; enjoy your time off. God Bless you.
Love you, I'll miss you ... from one of your viewing family members X X O O

I dont normally send in notes to TV personalities, but after all of your 48 years of hard work, it seems like the least I could do - to wish you well and say thank you!! When I watched your press release on last night's news I actually had tears of both joy for you, and sadness for all of us that will miss you so much. I grew up watching you on the evening news... and actually learned how to write backwards because of you!! Seeing all those videos last nite from your early career took me back to my childhood. I am so very happy for you and wish you the very best in your retirement. Yes you are truly family to us all! With best wishes from Kay Peterson

What a devastating announcement tonight on CTV News! I can’t believe you’re retiring! However, that being said, I certainly wish you nothing but the best.
I started watching CTV News about 13 years ago when I met my husband. He grew up watching you on the news and he passed the “tradition” on to me when we met.
In those 13 years, I’ve come to really appreciate you. Not only are you spot on with the weather, but you are a most respectable man. Though I don’t know you personally, you display a very special kindness and charm through your delivery of the weather on TV.
It is also quite evident that CTV News has been an enormous part of your life for the last several years and it’s a second family to you. I can only imagine what a difficult decision this must have been for you and that the transition from famed weatherman to retirement will not be an easy one. However, you mentioned on the newscast tonight that when you have more years behind you than ahead of you, it might be time to slow down and smell the roses. Well, Mr. Devall, I certainly hope that you have every opportunity to enjoy the smell of those roses. If anyone deserves at least that, it’s YOU.
I wish you many wonderful years ahead and I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing us (all your viewers) the opportunity to invite you into our homes each evening. You’re a kind and trustworthy man whom we’ll all miss dearly, but it’s been a true blessing that we’ve been able to know (if only through television) such a reverential man as you.
Thank you for your dedication and unfailing service to us all!
Best wishes,

My parents, who sadly are not with us anymore, absolutely loved CFTO's newcasts...my Mom just loved Dave & my Dad was totally enamored with Sandi.
Dave came onto the Canadian weather scene after the beloved Percy Saltzman, the guy who used to toss the chalk in the air.
Dave completely made the weather reporting his own & of course, bedazzled us all with his signature 'two-handed writing', 'umbrella', 'cool eyes' & writing backwards...all the while giving us outstanding weather reporting.
Dave, you are, bar none, the best weatherman in North America & I for one will miss you tremendously. I wish you all the happiness & joy that you deserve in your retirement years.

You’ve been part of our lives since my husband and I arrived in Toronto in 1966, young, apprehensive immigrants eager to start our new life. We were jobless with little money and watched you on a now laughably small TV in the basement apartment that was our first home. We prospered and continued watching you through our moves up the property ladder. When my Mum & brother also arrived from Scotland the tradition continued. Mum was a big fan. She was a survivor of the Clydebank Blitz, widowed early and arrived in ’76, teenage son in tow and set about making a new life for them in Canada. We lost her aged 89 in 2007 but you were/still are required viewing these many years later. It always seemed like we knew you, magic marker, corny jokes and all. Looking back at your photos is like turning the pages in our own albums. There are few icons around these days and the city sometimes seems to have changed out of all recognition. You have always reflected your personal values both on and off screen in your many appearances at charitable and service events. You have served us well. Enjoy your retirement. It’s been a trip. We will miss you.

I have been watching you for about 40 years. It started back around 1968 I had a chalkboard set up beside the television. My Dad loved to watch the news, I just liked the weather. He would call me just in time for your weather forecast, I would come running from any corner of the house to "Draw with Dave". I knew all of the symbols and which ones stood for what.
When I got older I travelled to Orillia frequently to entertain (accordion) at Scottish Festivals, travelling up Hwy 12 from Oshawa I always thought about you as I saw the signs for Bolsover.
About a month ago I was thinking of my chalkboard childhood memories and wondered to myself, when will Dave retire....he has to be due by my math...heh heh.
Thanks for the memories and entertainment...oh yeah and the weather too!

Not only was your weather forecast accurate, but when you reminded viewers to feed the birds in the winter, take care of the environment and animals, as well as showing wonderful, positive, little film clips, you stood taller than other TV personalities and became an inspiration and role model, not only to future weather people, but to viewers of all ages.
I cried with you and for you when "Scruffy" died and felt your loss.
Now, I am feeling another major loss in no longer having Dave Devall as a welcomed guest in my home every evening.
You are a genuinely decent human being who will be sorely missed.
I wish you great peace, joy and happiness in your retirement. You are very deserving.

It seems like it has been a family tradition to watch you over the years. Not only did I enjoy you as a weather man but I fondly remember you doing a show where you had on children who needed to be adopted, in hopes someone in the audience would fall in love with them and adopt them. Every time I hear "All you need is Love" I think of you and that show. Many blessings to you in your retirement.

when it comes to weather, YOUR name says it all.
With or without an umbrella, you come across as a real nice fella.
I watched you since I came from Germany to Canada;
what a change in 'das wetter'.
and not nessessessarily for the better!
But with your fiction,
how to dress was never fiction.
Dave, I dread the day you are gone from CTV,
But at least I know
that you and I will watch what tomorrows weather will be.
Wishing you the best my fella

Happy retirement Dave.

I’ve always felt somewhat of a connection to you as I watched your forecasts. Back in the 50s my husband was a “meteorological assistant grade two” out of Moncton’s head office in New Brunswick. At that time it was under the DOT. Every 8-hour shift at the defunct Debert airfield weather station, he had to read all the instruments and send a report to Monton by teletype. He was on shift alone there when the hurricane came through Nova Scotia and he holed up in the teletype room where there were no windows and the walls were soundproofed. The hurricane blew out the windows in the office.
All the temperature readings had to be manually entered into a huge log sheet - 24 hours a day, 30-31 days a month and at the end of the month they all had to be added up (no calculators then), across and down to get “Mean Temperatures”. The terminalogy was not lost on me, when he brought the sheet home for US to add up over and over again to come up with the right number in the bottom right-hand corner.
In those days the weather man on CBC radio was Percy Saltzman. He was a great weatherman. The neighbours would ask me what the weather was going to be and I would quote what I heard on the radio. They felt it was coming from “the horses mouth”.
Dave, you more than fill Percy’s shoes. I’ve always had great faith in your forecasts and follow the weather patterns on the evening news with real interest. Your great sense of humour coupled with your ambidextrous skills make watching your forecasts a delight. You are leaving even bigger shoes than Percy.
I will certainly miss you every evening at supper and look forward to the occasions when you will return with a special.

When you started on CFTO I was a recent grad from a TV repair school and was in Toronto for additional training in Telecommunications. My roomate and I bought an old "junk" TV and since we were Television Techs??, we thought we could fix it. Well we managed to get the set sort of working - but it received only one channel (yours). We watched you every night after class. Later on in 1964 or 5 I worked at CTV for a month, to help in conversion to Colour. The head guys at CTV were touring the facility and were very happy when they noted my name was the same as a famous CBC Director, but they didn't give me any more money for it. All the best Dave

My story about Dave Devall is one that truly represents his thoughtfulness towards people. My college Kurt offered to give me a lift into the city after our CTV national news shift. It was another frigid winter eve around midnight when we discovered that Kurt’s car battery was dead & frozen. Parked next to us was Mr. Dave Devall who, without asking, offered to hook up his booster cables and we were running smoothly within 15 minutes. Dave Devall took the time to help out people that he did not directly work with though the kindness that clearly is his nature. I will miss watching the weather as only Mr. Dave Devall can present. Thank you. Best wishes to Dave & regards to you all from Melissa. (former CTV’er & faithful CFTO viewer)

Betty has a story for you, she worked at CHEX TV when you were in sports. Her husband Bill Baker raised pigeons, which you knew of. You asked if you could do a video of him with the pigeons, which he agreed, as you wanted to put it on your sports story. Betty believes Gary Jones went to their home and did the video. Not long after you had gone to Channel 9, you called Betty and asked her if the video was still available, and that you would like it. Unfortunately, it couldn't be found.
Betty Baker sends her best wishes to you Dave.

It's funny the things a person remembers about their childhood. I remember living at the end of the world, in Scarborough when I was little. I remember our house and the Channel 9 station (I remember that we Channel 9 was actually channel 9 on the tv dial too). I think we moved there when I was 2. I'm 51 now. You have been a part of most of my days for most of my life! As a child, I remember you as a much younger man along with Uncle Bobby, Mr. Dress-up on Butternut Square and Chez Elaine and the Friendly Giant. You were a good part of my day always and still are. You still bring a smile to my face with your light hearted nature and your obvious love of your job and the rest of the your news crew family. I thank you. You will be dearly missed. When I think of the old Channel 9, or CFTO or CTV, I think of you. I can't believe you stuck it out for 48 years, but it does my heart good to think someone can love sharing the happiness their job provides for so many years. Thank you for helping to make my memories sweeter and for being such a special you. God Bless you. Happy, well deserved Retirement. May your days always be as sunny and warm as my wishes for you.

I have a burning question for you. I grew up in Northern Manitoba, actually North of the 53rd parallel where a normal winter day was -50 degrees. While growing up we were told that if you see Sun Dogs (rainbows) on either side of the sun it meant that the weather was going to change for the worse. Is this true or is it an old wives tale. As we all know that "A red sky at night means a sailors delight, a red sky in the morning sailors take warning", this one over the years seems to be true. I hope you can answer about the sun dogs.
Also I would like to emphasis that I did grow up in Northern Manitoba in -50 degrees. Since I was posted here in 1995 with the military, I have been watching your weather reports night after night and I have to admit that when you say we are headed toward the deep freeze with -15 to -20 degrees, I have to laugh.

You are one of a kind, when it comes to reporting the weather night in and night out. I don't know anyone else that does the weather as well as you have, along with a terrific sense of humour. My family and I have watched you for years; I grew up watching you, as I've always watched CTV. I'm now 32 years of age.
My only personal encounter with you was at the Radio Shack store (now called The Source) at the Yonge-Eglinton Centre several years ago. I recognized you immediately and wanted to say 'hi', but you were talking with someone else.
You have given so much of yourself to us, the viewers, that it's time to do things for you. I will miss your backwards drawings and writings on the plexi glass, which has brought a smile to my face even when the weather is bad.

Congratulations on your retirements, but surely I will miss your wits and funny remarks as well as your backward writting.
When I first arrive in Canada 20 yrs. ago from the Philippines, I could not understand why Canadians or people living in Canada are so fascinated with weather. Where I come from we do not worry about the weather nor we talk about it all day long or used the weather as a conversation starter, until I started watching CFTO-channel 9 in Toronto. Since then there will no evening news complete until you Mr. Dave Devall come at around 1820 to tell us what to expect the next day or for the big storm coming. You made weather topic interesting and also made me understand why is it important to watch the weather before you head out the door for any reasons you have on that day.
Well, Mr. Devall I hope you enjoy your retirement and once again congratulations to you and your love ones.
Thank you for letting me understand why weather watching in
Canada is so important.

You have become such a member of our family over the years.
My husband who grew up in the GTA remembers you as the weather guy way back when he was a kid!
I can remember my son whom now is in university, commenting throughout the years on your weather reports.I remember a time when he was about 12 years old looking at me coyly, smiling and asking 'what 4 letter word doesn't he want to say?' I smiled back and said, "SNOW".. There was also the time he commented on your unbrella, which you are famous for. Throughout the years I didn't really think my son paid much attention to the news, until last year. One evening my husband and I were watching the news, my son, then a senior in high school, came down stairs and he briefly stopped and looked at the t.v. and suddenly in a loud voice he said 'What is THAT guy doing the weather for; Where is Dave?'
Both my husband and I laughed and told him that you had the night off. Imagine, even Dave gets a day off!
Well Dave, even though we really don't know you personally, we feel like your part of our family. We'll all miss you!

The episode featured hot chicks doing their stripper stretches etc.. When you commenced the weather forecast you started off by advising viewers they could witness Lance doing the same exercises on the golf course. Hysterical. Priceless. Classic.

I came to Canada five years ago to begin graduate studies at U of T. I knew no one in the city and my hometown of Boston seemed very far away. I started watching CTV my first week in Toronto. I looked forward to seeing your weather forecast because in a way, you were one of the very first people I "met" in Toronto, always smiling, always with something funny to say. Thanks Dave, for making those lonely early days in Canada a whole lot friendlier for me. I'll miss you! Your friend, Amy Hawkes

It will be really sad to see you retire this year as we have watched you as our weatherman since the beginning of your career on CTV. We were all just kids and now in our 50's & 60's.....we also saw you in Oshawa at the airport several times and in the odd donut shop!...........you always said Hi. We knew who you were, but you didn't know us and still acknowledged a hello with a smile......

Please say it isn't so. You will be missed sooo much. You are such a classy gentleman, always impeccably dressed and so respectful of others. We can always rely on you for a joke and a ready smile. You made the weather report interesting to watch. I remember you from a TV show called, "Family Finder". What stayed with me was the kind and fatherly way you spoke to the children. I thought at the time what a nice man you were. I can't believe that I remembered this from so long ago but your retirement announcement brought it to mind and obviously you had made quite an impression on me.

We were the Francis's. I am deseparate for you to find the copy and send it to me. You see my biological brother died in a motor vechile accident when he was only 16 years old, and my adoptive parents thanks to your show are now in their eighties and nothing would make them happier then to hear his voice one last time before they go and meet him in heaven . I had a sense that this news was coming but still it saddened me. I will surely miss your entertaining and informative weather forecasts. My mom who passed away at age 93 some 5 years ago, never missed a dinner hour weather forecast by "Dave Devan". She was Hungarian and had some difficulty getting her tongue around "Devall". After trying to correct her pronunciation of "Devall", I finally gave up. She would counter by saying, "You know who I mean!" And we did.
I wish you health, happiness and fair weather ahead as you embark on new retirement adventures.

It was grade 6, 1973/74.
Our class was learning about the weather.
One day a guest strolled though our classroom, and as he passed my desk he picked up the baseball from my glove and walked to the front of the room.
I put my glove on and he tossed me the ball. The teacher looked at me strangely and them smiled. It was Dave Devall from television. He taught our class about how weather changes that day and got my fullest attention. I told my parents and all friends about that special day, and enjoyed watching him give weather reports on television.
Best wishes

Even though, I relocated to come to university in BC, more specifically Kelowna, I still check the news in Toronto. I was so upset to hear the news that you were retiring. I’m 20 years old and ever since I was a little kid, I always watched the 6pm CTV news with my parents. I can remember your drawings and you were always so upbeat. You were my favourite TV person when I was living in Toronto. To this day, no one on the CTV network in Vancouver can do the weather news as well as you especially the ‘umbrella’. I hope you enjoy your retirement. Finally, please know that my parents and I are living in BC but CTV news and your forecasts will be one of the things I remember most about my time in Toronto.

All these years later, with so many changes in all of our lives, you have remained such a constant and I thank you for that.
So many memories, my grandmother's glee when you would write backwards, which I learned to do, to pass notes to my girlfriend in class. We got caught but the teacher had no idea what we were saying. Thanks for that trick.

I would have preferred to deliver you a proper presentation - right to your Bolsover doorstep - and still will do so - but am battling 'shingles'
I would love to do your biography - as in published book - either with you (as I did Bob Baun's) or ghostwriter: what better for you than an author who has been a resident of Bolsover for 40+years (except for that stint at the Lorneville School house for 29yrs.)
Canadian biography is my forte and I've been doing it since 1975.
So - PLEASE - give it some thought and I'll be in touch directly when the fuss quietens down a bit!
Mom passed away in Nov. (almost made 99yrs.)and I've been looking for the perfect biography to do - and she would have been thrilled.Mom's cottage (on Stanley Road) is open all year,so we could meet and talk at ANYTIME.
Enjoy the plaudits as they come in - you deserve them, anne

My store, Angelique Flowers Ltd. was sold back in the eighties and I have had four kids, three grandkids and many more floral design positions over the years, but one thing has always stayed the same and that was watching you every night. You have been a treat, a bright light at the end of the day, no matter how bad the weather . God bless you in all you do!

We will miss you and hope you will have a great retirement. Here is what should have been called a Weatherman's Blessing.
An Irish Blessing
May the wind rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sunshine warm upon your face
And the rains fall soft upon your fields
And may the snow fall somewhere else
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

For the last 30 years whenever I traveled the world I always came home and immediately tuned in to watch you on CTV. You have been my security blanket, a comfortable pair of slippers...real and satisfying...just like home.
I am so happy for your retirement, and I appreciate you giving me enough time to deal with your departure. You must come back from time to time, or what about your own show? I'm sure you would have a huge audience.
I am so proud of what you have accomplished. You are the real deal and I will miss you terribly.

Since I have been an immigrant to Canada in 1994, I started watching CTV news & weather. I have always enjoyed watching you draw funny things on the screen even though I don't quite understand English. It is also amazing to watch you draw your cartoons backwards. Watching you for the weather forcast became a habit every night before I go to bed.
You was like an extended family to me.
Now I have a family of my own with 2 daughters, but still haven't given up my regular habit of watching CTV news and weather. It is the same with my spouse. If he ever missed the 6:00 news and weather, he always catch it at 11 before going to bed.
I am sadden that you are retiring, which means we will not be able to watch you after your retirement. We will miss you very much Dave. I hope that we can go back to the past so we can continue to watch you do your wonderful weather reports.
Sad to see you leave, but I will still wish you a much good health throughout your retirement life. Enjoy your much deserved retirement. Perhaps once in a while you will make a special guest appearance at CTV and give us all a surprise.
Best of luck to you and your family Dave. No one will be able to replace you Dave.
Perhaps you will reconsider staying on until I retire.
Again, we are very missed you.

I have grown up with Dave, and to me, he was a daily "fixture" in our home. I use the word, "fixture",
in quotes, as it does not accurately describe the relationship that he has with his viewers. He really is a member of the family.
I don't think I really realized the impact he had until I moved to Britsh Columbia, a year and a half ago. Although the CTV affiliates in B.C. are great, it didn't feel right. I realized what was missing when I watched a few installments of CTV newsnet, and saw my buddy Dave. It was like seeing your favorite uncle that you haven't seen in a while.
On a recent trip back to Toronto, I knew I was home when I saw Dave on the evening news.
To me, Dave Devall is Toronto. He embodies all of the qualities that it's good citizens strive for.
He will be sorely missed, but I truly wish him all the best in his retirement. It is a retirement that is well deserved.
I hope that CTV realizes what a treasure they have had for so many years.
Best of Luck Dave-Enjoy!!!

DAVE you are an ICON and RESPECTED by many for providing us with 48 years of weather. My most favourable memories and enjoyment of your postion over the years have been the many ways of how you did the weather. I loved how you drew your pictures of clouds, umbrellas and glasses on screen. You did a WONDERFUL JOB with a SMILE on your face and I will miss that along with your LAUGHTER. Congratulations on a long term career that provided many with enjoyment. TAKE CARE and ENJOY your retirement. You will be missed and God bless you :)

It is so sad to hear of your retirement. There will never be another weatherman like you. I have been watching you since i was a very little girl in Toronto. It is so amazing the way you could write backwards and draw the pictures the way you did especially the one of the umbrella and leaving the space for your hand to grasp the handle, and write cool so the eyes substitute your glasses. You are going to be missed very much but I want to wish you very very many more happy years and enjoyment in your retirement.

CTV news will not be the same without you!
Ever since I can remember, you have been a part of our lives. My earliest memory, I was about four, was of my mother making dinner with the TV news playing in the background. The weather was always my favourite part, at the time it was the only part, that my young mind thought was worth watching because you made the weather fun!
Later, as I grew up, I realized that you are truly an exception to the rule. You are special because you portray your love for life and your job in everything you do.
My son and daughter grew up as I did, watching CTV news and they both agree with me. You are still my favourite part of the evening news.
When my daughter went away to university, she commented that the news reports just weren’t the same in North Bay. The news team just didn’t seem to have as much fun with each other. I smiled and thought you are a big part of that.
We will all miss you very much. You are more than just the weatherman to us. You are a shining example of how we should live our lives………with humour, with kindness, with zest.
You are much appreciated.
Forever your loyal fan,

Whenever we get to our friends place in Burlington to visit, they have CTV on and I’ll never forget the first time I saw you doing the weather.
Of course, that wasn’t the first time I saw you.... I remember you from Ryerson...you were ahead of me maybe in second or third year. I’m sure you were there the year we put on The Red Mill and some of the seniors were in the cast. I was one of the three girls and Rick (Rice or McLean... Can’t remember the last name but have a photo from the ‘Paper’ that I could scan and send) was the father He was tall and slim, and you were blonde and quite good looking.
My friend tells me you are about to retire and sent me your email address. I’m sure you won’t remember me but I did hang around with Karen Hazzard, who ended up as a talent agent in Toronto. Others in my class included Colin Smith, Ernie Pacente, Bonnie Johnson, ....
I just wanted to say ‘Congratulations on your retirement. You’ve had a great career and done your job exceptionally well. I wish you all the best in your retirement years.”
I tried to retire once... lasted 5 months. Someone asked me to work for them (from home) and like you, still work although I’m in my ‘70’s.
All the best
Shirley (Hopkins) Brown
PS: Just went and looked at my photos. The Red Mill was performed in 1957 and ‘Father’s name was Rick Rice. Just a piece of trivia....

I have a t-shirt with your picture on it, holding an umbrella. Its my favorite t-shirt and I wear it often.
I will miss seeing you everyday very much. Enjoy your retirement, I hope the weather is nice for you.

My memory of Dave. Back in the early 70's you use to come into Happy Harry's Smoke Shop in Agincourt (now long gone) after your broadcast and bought - what was that? Mix? I worked there for years. You came in for years.
I have always enjoyed your reports. You never really promised good weather - just weather that was not so bad. You also represented your community very well with all the charity events that you have attended.
All the best in your retirement! (So where do you buy your mix these days?)

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. Our family would like to share a little anecdote about YOU!!
Back in the late '70's, our daughter, Shelley Darling, was asked by her friend's mother, Ruby Schwarz who lived in the townhouses on Ling Rd in West Hill, if she could babysit for a neighbor named Marlene. Turns out you were Marlene's date! At the end of the evening, you drove Shelley home and asked her, in our driveway, if Marlene had paid her to which she replied "no". Your response David was "Oh, fart" and you had to go back to get the money. Shelley was so surprised that you were "normal" and we all laughed about that incident the next time we watched you deliver the weather forecast. That, I think David, is why you have become so popular and much loved over your career - your normalcy and that people can relate to you.
May your roads of retirement, where they may take you, be as good to you and you have been to your viewers.
Vaya con dios David

I am sorry to see that your retiring. You certainly represent the highest standard of weather forecasting.
A number of years ago you spoke to the Bowmanville Rotary Club at the Flying Dutchman Hotel. Four of my students and I were invited to attend. After the luncheon you took time to talk to them and kindly offered to assist any of them, wherever possible, to achieve their goals - one of the students- Janice Seto, was in Berlin when the Wall came down in 1989. They and I never forgot your interest and kindness towards them.
Enjoy your retirement. You have earned it. But you will be missed.

As a child every night my grandparents would turn on the news while we ate dinner. My grandad quotes you all the time, and the whether is only correct according to him, if it comes from you.
I was watching your weather forcast a couple of weeks ago, when you advised people to check their batteries in their programmable thermostats. That night at about 11:00pm when our thermostat turns down for the night we noticed the display was gone and the temperature in the house was 28C. I remembered what you had said earlier that night on the news and went and put two new batteries in (which before that night I didn't it took batteries). The temperature started to come down, and we thought all thanks to Dave!!

Like many thousands of your viewers, our family listened while you announced your retirement on the evening newscast on February 2nd. While it may now sound trite, you have been like a family member for decades and we're going to miss you. You will receive many thousands of messages like this, wishing you well and good health in your retirement, and I would be fooling myself if I thought you would actually read this. Regardless, I wanted to have my message be part of the record.
I have fond memories of our families enjoying dinner at close-by tables at Colonel Saunders Restaurant on Dundas Street in Etobicoke. I remember sharing a quiet moment with you ( I don't think either of us spoke) as we looked at pictures in the trophy case at Martingrove Collegiate during a performance intermission.
Our link, although then unknown, goes back to the Village of Swansea and Rambert Crescent where I had many friends. I was born (1937) and raised in the valley below on Armadale Avenue.
Your announcement brought back a flood of memories, including your decades of outstanding professionalism, information and entertainment.
My family joins me in wishing you and yours many years of good health and a happy retirement.

I am a huge fan of you, and your work. I always get pleasure from watching you do the weather. My dad has told me stories about how you would draw a map of Canada and showed were the weather came from. I just wish that before you retire you would do the weather the old fashion way. Not just for me, but for all your fans. I would really appreciate it. Once you retire CTV will never be the same without you.
All the best, and have a happy retirement.

Every night, for the past 5 years or so, I've been hooked to the Toronto CTV newscast and the anchors, including yourself. You have the best news team in Toronto. I know you've been working for many, many years and it may be time for you to retire, but we will miss you all the same. You have such a great sense of humour, as do the others, and this made the newscast so much fun to watch.
I wish you all the best in your retirement and hope you will make special appearances when possible (I read somewhere that you might do that).

It is great fun watching a guy work enjoying the work at the same time. You are very fortunate in that respect. I live in Buckhorn now but was raised and worked in Lindsay. I remember when you were at CHEX!!!!! My wife and I will miss you and your unique relationship with your colleagues. The new weather people are very good as well... I'm guessing whoever chose them was using you as a model.
Our daughter Devin MacDonald is a member of the CTV Web team at your building. If you can find a couple of minutes, go to her office and she will give you a hug from us. Best Wishes..Brian and Susan Parish

As one of your younger viewers, I wanted to send you a message to let you know how wonderful it is to see you every night on the CTV News at 6 and how sorry I am to see you retire. Ever since I was a kid watching the news with my grandparents, I have enjoyed your weather reports, always capped off with a neat drawing on your glass board. You are a consummate professional, and represent so much of what doing the weather, and giving people information on the news, should be. Unlike many fly-by-night acts on television, I trust what you say about the weather, and must say that you are one of the main reasons that I choose CTV for my news in the evenings. I sincerely mean it when I say that you will be sorely missed. Thanks, Dave, for all that you do and for so many years of giving us the weather. Enjoy your retirement, you certainly deserve it!
Yours sincerely,
Ryan

He is responsible for my lifelong interest in the weather. When I went to College in the seventies I went with the intent to be a
weather girl and I was told in no uncertain terms that their would be no female in television in my lifetime, but I could be a Dee Jay if I liked, because women were accepted their. How about that Christine.

I just thought I'd send you a brief e-mail of congratulations and wishing you all the best in your retirement. I met you many, many, many years ago, as a fellow member of the congregation of Westway United Church and have followed your career with interest over the years. You always been there for us and truly have been the constant presence at CFTO. I too have just put in my notice of retirement, effective April 1st, after 37 years of service with a large regional police service just outside the GTA and I know just how difficult a decision it was for me to finally retire and I can only imagine and empathize with you, knowing how much your career and "your crew" have become such a large and defining part of your life. However, I suspect that we are both looking forward to starting a new chapter of our lives and the rewards that lie ahead of us. I wish you a long, healthy and happy retirement, as you too have served your community admirably over many years.
Sincere congratulations and regards Don D.

Throughout the tough times in my life, I could always depend on your sunny disposition if only for a few minutes. After watching you for 40 years, it is hard to see you go, but I hope you have a great retirement with few cloudy days. I read in The Star that Tom Brown is replacing you. He is great so maybe I won't miss you quite so much! Just teach him how to write and draw backwards!!

Sorry to hear of your retirement--we certainly will miss you---you have become a fixture in my livingroom at 6pm every night. Dave, I originally am from Oak Ridges Ontario, I know that was your stomping grounds when you lived on the CFRB Sideroad (Bloomington Road now) and you brought your son to play hockey at the Bond Lake Arena!! Bring back memories. I know that as my family would spend hours during the week and also on the weekend with my 2 brothers at the arena too;it was as if we actually lived there.Take care Dave and all the best to you.

Nevertheless, its good to retire whilst you still have your health and strength and can still breathe. Life is too short my friend, spend some quality time on yourself and that of your loved ones, and do the things that you have been neglecting for so long.
We'll miss you Dave -I must add that you are one of the best dressed reporter on television, very neatly dressed - love those suits.
Good luck, and God Bless.

You have certainly earned your retirement. I remember watching you when our family came to Canada in December 1970. I was 12 and we stayed with my dad's aunt in Scarborough for a while till we got settled. She used to watch CTV every night and you just became a routine for all of us. You are still the routine for me now at the age of 50 ! even though I am now living in the Kawarthas your weather is what we tune in to hear every night. Enjoy your retirement years and may you have many of them !!!

The last ten years I have been continuing to look at him doing the weather and saying to myself. "Well, he is still there, he couldn't have been that old then... not really. Doesn't really look that old now" and speaking to myself about perceptions and how they change over time.
Congratulations Dave on a long career and may you have a long and happy retirement.

We watched your weather reports when growing up on CFTO and kept in touch when living in Ottawa. We moved to California in 1985 and returned to Toronto in 2006. There you were still providing those great weather reports. It will be sad to see you go....but we understand retirement. Hope you have many sunny years ahead.

You may recall that I also worked for CFTO TV in the early 1960’s teaching French and doing book reviews. At the time, Ruth Fremes and Margaret Stevka had just started working at CFTO TV.
