My children are now the fourth generation
of the Murphy family to watch you on CTV.
I started watching you in 1964 when my father ( and family ) returned from Germany after being stationed at 3 Wing in Zweibrucken.
My father proudly served for 36 years in the RCAF from 1948 until 1984. He passed away suddenly in 1988.
My mother June ( 81 years young )and I wish you all the best in the next installment of your life, and if you are ever passing through beautiful Orangeville Ontario, please let me know, as you will always be invited to the "Ponderosa" for a BBQ and your favourite adult beverage -- or two !!
Regards,
Jim Murphy

I don't think you'll remember me, but you probably remember my father, Wally Hobbs, who was in the engineering department at CFTO from before the station went on air until the mid 1980's when he retired. He past away in 2004 due to Alzheimer's (age 92). When I was driving he and my mother home to Toronto after they had visited us in St. Catharines in the latter years, he was quite concerned we wouldn't get there fast enough because he said "Dave needs some help."
I spent my life in broadcasting, most of it at CKTB in St. Catharines where I know you were a fan of John Michael. I didn't know if you were aware that he passed away last year.
I actually started my career as the magician on the Uncle Bobby Show in 1965 when the program was live. I'm sure you remember when Bobby had the live animals in the studio. You were often in the same studio rehearsing the weather.
Just before going to air with my first show with Bobby, a duck got loose and rummaged through all the equipment I had so carefully set up. Instaed of the well rehearsed version of my act, I ended up doing whatever I grabbed first. I was the ripe old age of 20 at the time, and I have the video tape of the appearance. My dad arranged for it to be taped and in 1981 he had one of the one of the video technicians make a VHS copy. My grandkids still get a kick out of seeing it. Much of it is pretty funny.
Good Luck Dave and feel free to call sometime.

I grew up with you, I remember watching your forecast with my folks since I started watching TV. It was about that time I also wanted to be a pilot, and fondly remember meeting you at the Oshawa Airport (by the tower when I was a flight instructor), I think you were off to fly your aerocoupe? Anyway, I did grow up, and I am now an Air Canada pilot, but just one question...what's the secret to making crosswind landings in that thing?
Cheers, and best wishes to your retirement.

I have only been in the Durham Region for a couple of years (as I was living in the Ottawa Area)and it quickly becomes apparent how many people know who you are and appreciate not only your weather reports but your classy style. I must say it did not take long to become a Dave Devall fan. Even though I only had a couple of years to listen to your weather reports I am sad to see you go. Good luck and I wish you a wonderful retirement!

I just learned of your retirement announcement. I have been watching you since I moved to Canada 39 years ago and am proud to say we both grew old together. You have been a significant part of my family each evening without even knowing it. As my kids were growing up, every time I saw you on tv, I would say 'hey kids, did you know this man can write with both hands and backwards.' Now as my kids are grown, it has become a family joke that when we watch you together on tv, one of the kids turns around and says to me 'Dad did you know he can write with both hands?' before I can say it to them. I am pleased that you are going to retire after such a successful career, if anyone deserves this retirement its you. We will miss your daily visits into our home.
Happy Retirement.

Our family used to talk about your writing backwards in the newscast and looked forward to your weather forecasts evey night. It was something that set you apart from all the other weather men and women. I am going to miss your freindly nature and smiling face which was always a nice break from the news, which wasn't usually good. I will miss you when you retire and wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

I was saddened to hear that you will no longer be giving the weather on CTV, which I try to watch religiously every evening. I am 60 years old and it seems that you have always been "my weatherman" as far back as I can remember. You have made what can sometimes be a tedious topic fun with your banter between you and Christine and your ability to always look for a bright spot in what is often, in Canada, some mighty terrible weather conditions. I wish you all the best in your retirement, Dave, and a long and healthy life.

Will be sorry to see you go after all these years
I remember you in Peterborough. And followed you since you came to Toronto. The memory that has stuck with me all these years was a incident in Peterborough, I was at a late party in the west end. When you and your fellow announcers arrived at the party the station was still broadcasting thanks to a tape recording of a old previous evening show it was running and providing dance music BUT in a brake in the music you gave a weather report that was not in the remotest resemblance of what it was doing out side! Oh, did you and the other chaps leave in somewhat of a hurry.

My memories of you go back a long ways all the way back to public school actually, Forest Manor public school to be exact when thanks to Pat Marsden's daughter, Patty arranged for you to come to our school to talk about weather.
Listening to you that day started my facination with weather and the impact it has on our lives, thanks so much Dave not only for the 40+ years of weather but also for the memories as well.

I remember the day Channel 9 first came on the air (New Year's Day 1961?). There was an all-day telethon. The 3-man news team was introduced -- news (name I forget), weather (you) and sports (Ted Curl?). Someone called in a pledge of $1 for each pound of the 3 news guys' combined body weight. You and the news guy were average body weight but the sports guy was over 200 pounds. The pledger had to shell out almost $600 (in 1961 dollars).
Enjoy your retirement. I'm enjoying mine.

I have been watching you do the weather for at least 20 years. You made the weather fun and always showed us the upside to it. Even when you had to tell us it is going to be
-20 & -30 degrees. You are going to be sorrly missed. But, I wish you a SUNNY FUNFILLED RETIREMENT. My only request is that on your last day on air, that you go out in style and wear your KILT. Keep smiling that sunny smile.

I've been watching CTV News at 6 o'clock since I was two years old. That's a total of forty-five years to date!
I moved out of Toronto in 1987 but have continued to watch CTV News because it has the best anchor desk staff, reporters and of course weathermen (Or should that be weather people now that women are forecasting the weather?!).
I will miss your friendly smile, your drawings, the way you interact with the other anchor desk staff and of course your accurate weather forecasting.
My family now lives near Peterborough, Ontario which you include in your forecasts. Please tell whoever replaces you to continue including the Peterborough area as we rely on the weather forecasting on CTV News at 6.
My son has been watching CTV News at 6 for almost eighteen years and is hooked on the news and your weather coverage.
Good luck in your retirement and future endeavours. You will excel at whatever you do, just like you have done in your career.

I was very sad to hear you were leaving CTV, I've watched you...for gee, I guess all my life just about, since I can remember! When I was a child, I remember sitting down and watching the weather forecast, especially the days before a big Track and Field day at Birchmount Stadium, and hoping you'd call for sunshine! You'll be greatly missed by so many ! I look forward to seeing you come back from time to time, as I'm certain all of your co-workers will too! I hope you have many, many years of relaxing and enjoyable retirement and enjoy life to the fullest! Be very proud of your career, and especially all the wisdom you've passed along to others along the way ! It's surely made our lives more enjoyable ! I do hope the humor on the set continues, but it won't be the same without you Dave ! Best in everything from here on in! ENJOY!

Being an only child in elementary school, I used to spend all my time with my parents who would bore me to death watching the news everyday. the only thing that kept me quiet was the anticipation to see you come on! i loved watching you because you used to draw and everyday i used to get so excited when it was DAVE DEVALL TIME!!!
years later - im 25 now and i can not believe you're retiring! you were and have been the only reason i choose ctv over any other station. it most definiately wouldnt be the same without you! i hope they choose someone as inventive, warm hearted and pleasant as you have been to me as well as my family. we watched the moment on ctv when they said you would be retiring. we saw tears in your eyes...and surprisingly we had tears in ours. good luck and much love on your future endevours.
~kim c.
p.s. my dad watched you from back in the day when you used to do the whole weather report from behind the screen. you will most definitely be missed by all xoxo

I remain able to draw and paint equally with both hands and have used these talents to win numerous art competitions as well as being selected to attend various art schools for "gifted students", a graduation from the Sheridan College Animation program and a position at Disney's for a time.
Today I still entertain and teach young art students with my abilities.
With all that, there is the love you have for flight, as I do as well, my father worked for A.V.Roe building the Arrow, my son is an aircraft mechanic and we share that love for aircraft together.
So thank you Dave for you're inspiration in my life and all the best in retirement, you'll be missed.

I have been a faithful viewer for as long as I can remember. You ask how the weather is and I seek your advice.
Well I have come to one conclusion. How can you leave, I haven't yet figure that out.
The posting for you position has to read something like this.
Seeking a Weather person for the six clock news on the Canada's Leading News Broadcast.
You must be able to meet people where they are at the dinner table. Play golf, draw backwards, be charming, and most of all have a sense of homour.
Qualifications:
You must have the heart the size of Dave's and be able to deliever the news in good times and bad. Even when Mel calls out the army. Ok who can't forget that newscast.
You must be able to fly a plane, play golf like DAve and have big enough shoulders to take all the jokes that Ken is going to fire at you when you mess up.
Make sure Christine gets home safe and keep Lance in line.
If you feel your up to the challenge please reply to this posting. Warning this position should be taken serious there's a lot of Canadians that are counting on the next person. Job ID THERE IS NO PRESSURE!!!!
I will dearly miss you Dave.

You have been an icon to all Canadians, and have provided a sense of stability in all our lives........we have gained a sense of comfort and high respect through your "iron-horse" dedication to your profession.
Your dedication to your role leads to a great message that needs to be delivered to all young and upcoming employees......take the challenge.....live the challenge....and achieve above the challenge. So often we see so many individuals that want and expect it all.....yet offer little to achieve their/ or their companies goals! You offer yourself everyday to hundreds of thousands and constantly exceed expectations! Thank you for inspiring many (including me) to give above and beyond the call of duty!
Cheers and enjoy your retirement......well deserved Dave!

My name is Courtney and I'm a student in Oakville at Sheridan College. I'm in the Interior Design Program and my 2nd year final project is the design of an office space. Until recently I've been having trouble finding a concept... that is until I saw the commercial for "60 Days of Dave" on ctv news. I've decided to use "Dave Devall" for my inspiration and concept. Why? Well, the fun loving and "hometown" feel you give over the news is exactly the same kind of atmosphere I want for my office space! Open, fun and comfortable is not what the "typical" office space is usually like and I plan on taking a unique route and create a working atmosphere where people are as comfortable as you seem to be on the television. I know you're busy with e-mails and retiring but I was wondering if you would be able to let me know if you have any ideas of your own for what you would do with an office space if you had the choice. Thanks a lot and congratulations on your retirement! I sure am going to miss your reports!
Hope to hear from you soon!

Idey is.Later, in his second year university he was diagnosed with a brain tumor (cancer). In Jan 1982 or son was a patient at Princess Margaret Hospital & of course we were watching the 6 o'clock news & weather. That eve.you again spoke of Mt.Idey
in your forecast. it brought a chuckle & smile to a 21 year old

I felt very sad the evening I watched the news and they announced your retirement. As I watched the lovely tribute they played my mind took a trip down memory lane to the days when we were newcomers here in Toronto and my family and I were experiencing our first Canadian winter. We listened very intently in those days. I was 18 and fashion was a priority, you soon made me realize that winter in Canada was not quite the same as my native Dublin where rain was the usual weather news of the day. My lovely leather coat and fashion boots were not going to cut it according to Dave! So much water under the bridge since those days watching you, my parents are no longer with us and we are fast becoming the older generation in our family. You have been a part of that family and we will miss you. I hope you have a wonderful retirement and I hope you know how many family stories you are a part of.

I used to get home 23 odd years ago about 5:40, and my daughter would put my newborn grandson in my arms. She would be almost beyond herself with Michael crying, etc. most of the day. He was collicky(?)
I'd say warm his bottle & I'll look after him.
When CTV news came on & Dave was on, I'd say "Oh look, there's Dave with his pretty colours doing the weather"!
I tell you, from the time this baby could see & hear Dave's voice, he'd turn his head in the direction of the tv & be calm!
He'd drink his bottle, but when he heard Dave, he'd stop to listen. He is a young man now, but when Dave is mentioned, he still gives a smirky smile.
My daughter said I should email to tell you this.

I can't believe your time with CTV is almost over. Dave, we will truly all miss you and you are a legend. I'm sixteen years old and I love watching your weather reports due to your creativity and fun humor. I hope you have a relaxing retirement because you truly deserve it. I wasn't born yet to see your younger years of weather reporting but I know that you have pure talent when it comes to the weather report. You seem like such a happy and fun loving man which attracts me to watch the news(because most teenagers really don't care about the weather report). But Dave you make it interesting and enjoyable to watch. I wish you and your family the best! Congrats and thank you Dave for your years of a confident, lovable and artistic weather report.

I am a 23 year old who since I can remember, has always had you to rely on for weather. Pinball was right in saying that there was a certain trust factor that you always brought to the table. As a child growing up, at 6pm it was always news time, and no one ever moved until the weather was done and Dave said his forecast.
Whenever any of my friends growing up watched the other news stations and told me what the forecast was going to be, I looked at them and said; nope that is not what Mr. Devall said and I have stuck to that until this day.
Hearing your voice always brought a sense of genuine caring towards the viewers. Whenever you said “make sure to take an umbrella, or make sure you bundle up”, I felt like you were talking directly to me. It is a very rare aspect to find in a person, and something that you were able to do brilliantly.
Dave, all I can say is thank you so much for being you. May God bless you in all that you do, and know that a lot of people are going to miss the weather forecast, because everyone knows that what Dave says goes.

Living in Scarborough I have grown up watching you predict the weather. You have contributed a large amount to my interest in weather and meteorology. I have always wondered how weather you get your information and present your forecast on the news.
I was wondering if there was any possible way I could come in and see how the weather team at CTV-Toronto works.
Thank you for your time.

Dave was always the best part of the news for me. My single mom and I made sure we always watched him together, which was a very important bonding time for us both as she worked so much to support us.
I will never forget the time I met Dave at a rotary auction, I was helping out at my high school with the A/V equipment, and suddenly there he was, as down to earth as can be, he shook my hand and was really nice to me and I have never and will never forget it.
The news will never be the same without Dave Devall. I got tears in my eyes when I read he is retiring. Of course he has earned it, but I am still so very sad to know that when I visit Canada, he wont be there on the news to remind me of all my good days growing up when watching him draw those umbrellas was the highlight of the evening.
Thank you for everything Dave, you are very loved, and will be very, VERY missed.

Just wanted to say thanks for the great memories, not only of you giving us accurate weather all theses years on CFTO but also the memories of growing up together in YORK. I am not sure if this is a good time to bring this up or not, but I better start the procedure of suing you for the personal injury I received on the account of your dog. I remember a very serious injury to my finger stopping a fight between SKIP and the dog that belonged to the Chappels. I need to start the process before you are retired, so as not to affect your pension. Some day we will meet and have an all day sucker at Tonks!
You will never no how much it meant to me that your mother made the effort to attend my mothers funeral all those years ago.

Yea5rs later we met when you came to the U-haul Rec Vee World to get a trailer hitch on your K-Car wagon and I was the Rec Vee manager . Based on those couple of meetings I alway had that feeling deep inside that you came to work each day just to personally tell ME the weather . In the years since 1962
When we didn’t know just what to do
We didn’t need to rant and rave:
We just turned on the tube and listened to Dave!
Dave added to our vocabulary
Using words not found in the dictionary;
Words that would earn us a proper scolding
Like ‘humy and stickid’, and ‘milding’ and ‘colding’.
Season by season, it gave us a thrill
To marvel at Dave’s artistic skill;
As each of us sat in our castles or hovels
Watching him draw umbrellas and shovels.
Dave’s talents transcend prognostication
He’s done a great service to our nation;
His time off-screen has been well-spent
Supporting his very own Regiment!
It won’t be the same when he has gone
But we will try to soldier on;
We all agree Dave is the best,
But there is no doubt he’s earned his rest.

My early childhood memories of CFTO were delivered via rabbit ears on a tiny black and white TV. I was born in 1956 at the “East General Hospital” in York Township.
Kindergarten got in the way of me watching the “Kiddo The Clown” show on a regular basis.
However I remember watching “your” weather forecasts nightly to find out if I would need a raincoat and umbrella in the morning.
I walked the 9.5 miles (just kidding, actually a little over a mile) to my “Kindergarten” class which was located at the Dunbarton Public School (Pickering Township) building every morning. I was always prepared for the weather conditions thanks to you!!!
In those years the “TV” always received channel 6 (CBC), channel 11 (CHCH), a snowy channel 4 (Buffalo) and the clear channel 9 (CFTO). A snowy channel 7 (ABC) appeared and once in a while channel 2 (NBC).
Dave,
Leonardo da Vinci wrote many of his papers in code (reverse writing) as you did in those days.
It’s a good thing a 5 year old off to school saw you reporting the weather from the other side of the glass on the TV screen!!!
It’s also a good thing that you are “ambidextrous” and kept the weather report interesting for a 5 yr. old! What hand is drawing the umbrella tonight???
Thank you and you will be missed; Good luck on your future endeavors,
Gord

May your retirement be filled with the love of family, that you experience the warmth of each Summer's day forever more: the quality of your retirement be as renewing and invigorating, as the blossoming of new life which blesses us each Spring: the next chapter of your life as colourful as that brought to us by Autumn winds and, may you always experience the joy of each winter's first snow fall.
We have found your humour to be unparalleled by anyone in your field; your temperament most enjoyable and, your quest for delivering the weather in the most professional, yet somehow informal and relaxing manner, superior to any other.

I don't know if you remember this but about 10 years ago, a few years after you stopped writing on your board, my brother brought your #1 fan - my nana - to visit you.
She watched you everyday faithfully for the entire time you've been with CFTO/CTV. We lived about 2 minutes from CFTO, on the other side of McDairmid Park.
Len, my brother, and my nana told you how they missed you writing on your board. Then, a few months later, you got your board back!!!
Sadly, my nana passed away before she could see you write on it again but I know she is up there, shusshing all the other angels so she can hear you talk (like she did to us).
Now, my 75 year old mom watches you faithfully and will miss you very much. She says it will just not be the same without you.

Anyway, Dave. I admired your work long before I ever worked on WorldBeat News in '72. And I continue to be a fan today, as does my whole family, especially mother Jeanne Neill. All are still living in Welland.
All the best to you, Dave. It's been a treat to have you on the air.
If you ever come out to Terrace BC please look me up. We can go salmon & halibut fishing, do a little golfing, talk about Ken behind his back...
Best Personal Regards

Thanks for all your forecasts. I started watching CTV about 20 years ago when I was 18. Just to see your smiling face and hear "what type of day was headed our way".
Your delivery was always perfect. The quality of your character shines through, in a world without much integrity, at times. It is this character that has gained you the honor and respect of your peers.
We are losing more than a weatherman!
You willed be missed.

After watching you for several years, it is an understatement to say you will be missed !
My best friend and I watched you for many years and found you to be a gentleman and a great journalist.
When we were driving in the country one day there were several cows in a pasture and they were all standing up.
Upon returning the same field had some of the cows standing and some laying down.
My friend declared we were going to have intermittent showers as it only meant no rain while they were all standing.
Thank goodness I didn't rely on her for weather!
Please enjoy your retirement and it was great to hear that RNDA awarded you the Lifetime Achievement Award.
All the best,

I hear that you think you might be retiring soon. Since you haven't done the deed yet, I still have time to say sorry but you'll have to change your plans. I could not possibly hear the weather forecast from any other lips than yours and the weather itself won't know which way to turn with you gone. The world will not even be able to stay in it's proper orbit with such meteorological turmoil. So,now I'm sure you understand why you just can't retire. The safety of the world rests squarely on your shoulders.Love Mary

For 48 years forecasts gave.
At the TV we’d peek,
Where he’d always look chic
Telling us, through all weathers, “Be brave!”
Dave is our Weatherman, chalk stub in hand
He writes on his glass board each night.
A gentleman, truly, not boring or bland,
He turns dull days to ones that are bright.
We tune in to CTV come six o’clock
To listen to news, weather, sports;
But Dave is our forecaster, really our rock ~
We love all his snappy reports!
His talents for writing are well known to all,
But of one he’s especially proud,
For it’s forwards AND backwards ~ he holds us in thrall
With his brollies and shovels and clouds.
He’s given us “stickid” and “milding”, you know,
We’ll miss his familiar face;
No matter how great his successor may be,
He’ll be dreadfully hard to replace!

Since he was an elder in a modern community he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.
Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the tribe should collect firewood to be prepared.
But being a practical leader, after several days he had an idea.
He walked out to the telephone booth on the highway, called the Bureau of Meteorology and asked, 'Is the coming winter in this area going to be cold?'
The meteorologist responded, 'It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold.'
So the elder went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared.
A week later he called the Bureau of Meteorology again. 'Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?'
The meteorologist again replied, 'Yes, it's going to be a very cold winter.'
The elder again went back to his community and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find.
Two weeks later the elder called the Bureau again. 'Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?' he asked.
'Absolutely,' the man replied. 'It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever.'
'How can you be so sure?' the elder asked.
The weatherman replied, 'Our satellites have reported that the Aboriginals in the north are collecting firewood like crazy, and that's always a sure sign.'

It's a pleasure to write you directly and tell you how much I've appreciated you over the years. Your voice is so unique and I remember watching you on the big console tv as a little girl growing up in Bowmanville. Honestly Dave, your voice takes me right back there instantaneously; that same feeling! There aren't many things that can do that!! I'm not sure writing these words can convey how meaningful that is to me. Dave, your voice has always had a very comforting and safe tone. Now as an adult, I've witnessed nothing but integrity and kindness in your manner each time I've watched you. I suspect those who know you would say something similar (although of course nobody's perfect!). Dave, I don't think I'll ever forget your voice, along with your gentleness and ever present wit! I want to thank you for the many years you've served us here in Ontario. It has truly been our privilege to benefit from your broadcasting gift and expertise. Thank you, Dave!! I'll miss your voice and your presence very much!! I wish you every blessing in the years to come. Oh, and a big thank you to your family for sharing you with us! I'm sure there's been some long hours over the years, and oh boy, I bet you could tell us some stories! May God bless you and fulfill you in just the way you hope for. Congratulations on your retirement. You have reaised weather awareness for thousands of us loyal viewers. I was glad the web site mentioned your early days at CHEX. It was appearing that CTV gave birth to Dave Devall. Those early days on Television Hill with the newly hatched CHEX must have been exciting. Remember Marie Callaghan ? from housewife to Peterborough`s Sue-Ann Niven overnight ! Was del Crary a star on the new CHEX or did he limit himself to radio? I`m sure I am not the only former Peterborough resident who resented the big red brick monster on 401 at McGowan Rd. for stealing Peterborough`s grade A weatherman.
Enjoy the retirement years !

I remember living in Toronto in the winter of 82-83, studying to become an Environment Canada meteorologist, and watching you draw weather symbols backwards. Very inspiring indeed! :-) I am still in meteorology, although not with Environment Canada anymore. I am a weather geek, and crank out up-to-date climate info for my local CTV outlet. I thought "why does it only have to be here?" So I made some for Toronto. With this you can see that the coldest day of the year on average is January 21, with a low of -11.89 degrees and the warmest is July 18 at 28.19 degrees. I post the climate info for Toronto at www.truenorthweather.com/climyyz
I live about a 4 hour flight from Toronto, so it just shows that I have too much free time :-) Enjoy retirement, Dave (as I hope to as well, without 48 years at the job though. Heck, I JUST turned 49 :-)

My family and I have been watching you and CFTO since 1961.
As you said to Christine and Ken on the night of your announcement, you become a part of our family.
So as you started to tell us of your retirement, I must admit I began to shed a tear.
I knew this moment would eventually come and you are so deserving of it.
I have a little story for you. My father who was and still is an advit CFTO watcher and a huge Dave Devall fan is now in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease. He sometimes forgets our names or asks questions repeatedly. You he never forgets.
A couple of years ago I took my puppy to obedience class. Pat Foran was in our class with his family and their new puppy Jersey.
After the class was over my dad wanted to speak to Pat. So I went over and kindly asked him if I could have a moment of his time, as my father would like to meet him as he is a huge fan of the news (show) but that he does suffer from Alzheimers. Pat was more than kind and obliged us.
So after shaking Pat's hand, my dad says to Pat "How about that Dave Devall" "I really like him" He's been there for a long time". A little embarassed that he side-stepped Pat about all his great and very interesting consumer reports and ask how you were?
Pat, as gracious as he is, told my dad that you were a terrific man and well respected among the crew.
Speaking to Pat about you put a smile on my dad's face and that is something I will not soon forget.
You will be very dearly miss. Thanks for the memories!

Unlike other celebrities or political icons who are impressed by your long service at CTV, we are just common people but we still would like to say a few words of how you have touched lives that you may not be aware of. I'm sending this email on behalf of my mother (a Chinese senior with long term illness) who knows just a little bit of English. She has been suffering from the medical conditions of post stroke and a serious neurological disorder. While her brain is shutting down gradually, she is still very clear cognitively. Our family has the routine of watching the 6 pm CTV news and then the 7 pm Fairchild Chinese news every evening. My mom is immobile and watching TV is one of the very few things that she really enjoys. You are one of her favourites to appear in that box, especially when you do the magic drawing of the umbrella and other things. We would encourage her to guess what you are going to draw that day. She would laugh and the umbrella is her favourite especially when you put your hand to "hold" it! We told her you are going to retire and promised her to write you something on her behalf and here we are! Thank you for being a favourite image and bringing some meaning to a simple heart! Happy retirement!

Cumulus, strata, blue skies overhead.
Rain, hail size of baseballs and often its snowing
Listen to Dave, no more need be said.

Watches and warnings in summer and fall
Followed, predicted with amazing accuracy
And easily covered by our own Dave Devall.
Troughs of low pressure forecast on radar
Conversions, inversions, humidity high
Wind chill factored temperatures that help to sustain us
As sunshine comes beaming through overcast skies.
Freezing rain, lightning, heat waves and thunder
Presented by Dave in inimitable style
His consistency surely a veritable wonder

I will truly miss you. When you were away I was so worried that I actually called CTV to make sure you weren't gone long term. And now that you will be leaving for real, I'm deeply saddened. You bring a charming personable face to weather and the news. You make us proud to be Canadian!. Thanks for all your work Dave and best of luck in all your endeavors!

I've been watching you since I was nine years old. I had no choice back then but to watch you and drove my mother crazy each evening while the news was on. What use does the news have to a nine year old! Well one evening while we were watching you do the weather, my mother said watch close! and you did it! You drew your umberella with both hands and held it...I was hooked! Now I have my grandchildren watch you. Sorry to see you but have a happy retirement.

I used to watch the news with my father every day and I wouldn't leave the couch until the 6:30 weather was over. I watched Dave everyday to see what the next day would bring!
I stopped watching the news about 6 years ago, and tuned into it again earlier this year hoping to see Dave and there he was. I felt like I was watching an old friend.
I saw Dave on a cruise ship some time in the 90s. I am 21 now, and I must have been 10 or 11. I wanted to tell him how much I loved his weather report but I got too shy and couldn't say anything. Dave, do you remember going on that cruise? It was rather Norwegian or Holland America.
You will be missed Dave!

I later came to discover you were not really in there.

I just wanted to mention what you did for my mother for her 80th birthday back in 1991. She was such a fan of yours and our entire family used to laugh and how she would go ga ga whenever you were on the news. You agreed to have her come to the CFTO set where you not only met with her, but you spent about 2 hours talking to her one on one and even had her picture taken on the set with you. You will never know how much that meant to her. She passed away a couple of years later, and on her bedside table was an 8X10 photo of you that you had signed. She said goodnight to you every evening before she went to sleep. Thanks so much for making an old women so very happy. Good luck in your retirement and God Bless.

We would like to wish you well in what ever you do after leaving the weather channel.
We have enjoyed watching you over the many years, probably about 30, especially your detailed graphics. That is the one thing that we will miss the most. The writing backwards came second on the list. We have moved a lot and some of those moves took us out of Ontario but each time we moved back to Ontario it was great to find that you were still reporting the weather. I often wonder why other weather reporters do not have the same kind of detailed graphics as you have.
We wish you well on the rest of your journey.

I grew up watching CFTO News with my parents and you have always remained the constant. When my father pointed out to me that you were writing backwards ( with both hands) I was amazed. You made the weather reports interesting and how sensible it was to stand behind the glass as to not block your work from the viewers.
You will be missed Dave, but not forgotten. I wish you good health and a happy retirement.

I would like to add that your expertise of writing with both hands backwards on a plexiglass board was enjoyed on our first TV [ black and white no less ] while we watched CHEX TV from Peterborough, Ontario.

I am 54 and grew up watching you all my life.
I grew up on a farm near Alliston, have 9 siblings and my father based most of his decisions on Dave Devall and your weather report.
At dinner in the kitchen, the TV would be on and when the weather came on, we knew to be silent and not be told twice. Everything would stop so Dad could listen to your weather report. I can say sometimes he smiled most of the time he would swear a little or alot depending on what your report would be.
Seeding, haying, putting the cattle out to pasture, grain harvest, potato harvest all got done on what you said.
Dad and Mom have long since sold the farm and both have passed away.
When I was watching the news and Ken made the announcement about your retirment, it brought back a flood of memories. My wife and I watch CTV news every nite and watching you is always fun.
We wish you well, you will be missed and thank-you for the memories that I will always cherish

Well, I became enamered with your backwards writing since the day I started watching television. I remember the day you announced your retirement, my phone started ringing....my friends asking if I was going to make it! They always understood that they I would not answer the phone until after you finished your piece. And so many said: 'you know so many weather facts because of Dave' i.e Albert Clipper - one of my favorite phrases to throw in whenever I can. A bitter wind/chill - 'perhaps it's an Alberta Clipper' I would say!
All the best Dave, and thank you for being a part of my life for the past 35 years. You will be missed!

I met you in early 1965 at CFTO when my son Brian appeared on the Uncle Bobby Show to promote Scarborough Fire Fighters upcoming Drum Corps Show at Cedarbrae CI. I found you an easy to talk to nice guy who's weather report was always entertaining and sometimes you got the weather right (just kidding)
I have not had the pleasure of meeting Key Shaw in person but I would love to. Ken used to phone me nearly every night for news when I worked the switchboard for Scarborough Fire Department. I never gave him any news so in deperation he finally said "Tell me a joke Mr. Read". I didn't tell him that either.
Anyway, best of luck on your retirment, thought I think you'll never really retire. I haven't worked or lived in the GTA for 20 years because I am retired but I still watch CTV news and weather every night.
All the best.

Like so many others - I grew up with Dave Devall - the day wasn't complete until I caught the weather with Dave. It's just the way it was. I am so glad you are retiring while riding high. Like you, I too am a licensed pilot although I am not current so I understand the love of aviation. I wish you and your family only the best in your future years. i have watched you all my life...literally! When i was a little girl i was never very interested in the weather, or news for that matter. But i always waited around to watch you draw that famous umbrella. My little sister and i would try and draw our own umbrella by fogging up windows all over the house and writing "cool" and drawing the famous umbrella. I must say... i did get quite good at it. Now living on my own and attending college, i always find a way to watch you and see what you have to say about the weather. You are the one and only i ever i counted on when i wanted a snow day! How are you, as good as good can get I hope.
Dave I pray that God will continue to BLESS you off the air as much as He did while you were on the air.
Now Dave WHY? You're still young, funny, handsome (an eye catcher) and still very very much sexxxxy before the camera. So I ask the question again Dave WHY? I've enjoyed listening to you reporting to your viewers the weather for over 20 years, and never got tired or bored of hearing your voice once in those years. I've never heard or see another weatherman do the things that you do.You're UNIQUE and an ORIGINAL with your own stylish ways, that I just love. The holding of the umbrella, looking through your cool glasses and the best of them all THE WRITING BACKWARD WITH BOTH HANDS!!!! Coming to Canada in the 70's from my Native country of Jamaica it was truly a weather shock for me, but when I started listening to you on the evening news it really made the transition much much easier for me. So Dave again WHY? God bless you Dave on your retirement.

You always added a touch of realism to the weather, erring on the side of caution, yet never overstating the situation. We always felt that we could rely on your weather forcast.
I guess personally, I have also enjoyed wathcing you. As a former WO in The Black Watch, I felt we had a little in common. Both members of the armed forces and both wear a kilt. My connection with the Air Force was when they would fly us places. Otherwise, I liked to keep my feet on the ground. That is why I joined the Army instead of Navy or AF. That and the fact that I ended up being the 3rd generation to serve in The Black Watch.

I improvised on a song for you:
Those newsroom days of snowshovels and snowstorms are gone,
But, in my mind I know they will still live on and on;
And how do you thank someone who has taken you from morning
Through weather conditions all day long;
If you wanted the moon I would fly above the clouds,
But I, I, I, would rather have a heart to heart with Daave,
DE VALL!
The time has come for closing umbrellas
And long last L O OKS must end,
But, as you leave,
Know you are leaving your best friends,
A friend who has taken me from chalk to prescreen.
What can I give you on return?
If you wanted a star,
I could name all of the stars,
Cause I, I, I, would rather have a 1 degree rainy start,

We feel that the 6p.m. CTV News anchors, weatherpeople and sportscasters are part of our family. We did have the opportunity to meet and chat with Lance in Port Perry many years ago, and have met and chatted with Tom Clark when he lived in Aurora,(in fact his parents lived below us in the condo building and Tom lived across the road from my best friend of 52 years). I also had the opportunity to meet and say hello to Lloyd Robertson in "Peter's Fine Dining" in Markham when he and Tom and their wives were dining just behind us. We sent you an e-mail already, but it apparently got caught in a loop and kept coming back so here we go again.
My husband and I live in Cobourg. I know you are familiar with that beautiful town. You were here last September for a golf tournament which my uncle and aunt, Reg & Dorothy Ward, organized to help raise funds to restore the paintings and frescoes in their Church. You were also here many years ago as MC for the show which helped to raise funds for the mentally challenged. My uncle was again Chairperson and I have seen pictures of you sitting down to dinner with them.
Your good works do not go unnoticed and we thank you so much for taking the time to get involved as we do all the other CTV personalities.
Like almost everyone else, we never watch any other station for weather and news. We so enjoy your camaraderie and good cheer, especially in these hard times.
By the way Dave, I have a childhood memory of watching a show on CHEX-TV many years ago in which there was a young man dressed up as Santa and around Christams time he answered letters from the young boys and girls. I have been curious for years. Was that you?
Thank you Dave for providing us with many years of informative and cheerful broadcasts.

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement!
I have been watching your weather forecasts since 1966 and at least a couple of events stand out in my memory:
Back in the day, when forecasting technology was not as accurate as today, you had predicted fair weather. Then we cut to Glen Cochrane pacing outside the studio, keeping dry under an umbrella, chanting “I believe Dave Devall, I believe Dave Devall”.
When you were on vacation, many years ago, Jim Junkin filled in for you and laid claim to fame as the only graduate of the “Dave Devall School of Backward Writing”.
For 35 years, I was employed in Air Traffic Control Flight Planning where weather was definitely an important part of my life. At work, it was a very serious matter. Accuracy on the Controller’s display was paramount. But what a pleasure it was to come home and watch the news and weather on CTV.
Dave, you have always shown dedication to accuracy, along with the ability to make it entertaining.
We will miss you. Enjoy your well deserved retirement!

When I was 9 years old, living with my family in West Rouge (Pickering), a new television station opened near us, in Scarborough. My family and I were really excited and watched CFTO every chance we could on our old black-and-white telly. You were the first individual weather forecaster I got to know, and you have been there giving the weather reports in my life ever since. West Rouge has long since become part of Scarborough, and changed its name to West Hill. Our old house was sold, my parents have passed on, and my family is scattered about Ontario. I myself no longer live in West Hill, though I’m still in Scarborough (Agincourt). Now I will lose one more “constant” in my life as you retire. Life changes and I will survive, but I absolutely must thank you, Dave, for all your years of dedicated reporting of the weather, and for the good, kind, and honourable role model you have been for the citizens of Scarborough and all the other areas CTV broadcasts to. We will all miss you, but you have certainly earned your rest so, please, enjoy your retirement to the utmost. And remember, everyone will be waiting to see those “special reports” you promised you’d come back for.
Best of luck, now and for ever, Dave.
With fondness and thanks,
Jennifer Cawthorne,

You may or may not remember this. About 10 years ago you came into my office at he truss manufacturing plant in Bolsover with another fellow from Bolsover, who's name I'm sorry has slipped my mind, to inquire about a roof for the pen at the local store for Bolsover Billy. I designed that roof for you. When I told my family about it I always got ribbed about it whenever Bolsover was mentioned on the air, especially on Ground Hog Day. I just wanted to say it was a pleasure to meet you and to help out on that project. I just want to let you know my wife, Betty and I always listened to your forecast each night to see how the drive would be from Lindsay/Fenelon Falls area to Bolsover. I really think though you should patent the umbrella design you draw and see if it can be marketed as the DaveNewsUmbrella. I think it would be a smash hit. We want to wish you all the best in your retirement. We will miss your daily reports very much, they were a tremendous help.
Good Luck, Dave,

she told my daughter that you were related to our family. I was just curious if this
was true or not or even if you would know.
I have never heard of your last name being in my mother's family.
The only names that I knew were Lytle, Vilneff, Prisk. I know that she had a very large family. She was the 13th in the family.
I don't want anything from you, I was just curious.

I have no family here and for years you have been a stable and dear family member. Whenever lonliness threatened you were always a familiar and dependable force. You became more than a weatherman more than a T.V. prescence you became safety and sameness in an ever changing and scary world....I was in tears when your announcement was made. I am happy for you that you will now get to enjoy some family time and some play time....and you deserve it...but for some of us your leaving is a painful reminder that we lose those we love and nothing ever stays the same....Thank you for all the years of dependable weather and a safe harbour in a storm.

The nasty forecasts he’d take on the “chin”
And that gentleman’s name is “Dave.”
Dave, we will miss you very much when you retire. Supper time won't be the same without you. You won’t have to drive in bad weather anymore. Take it easy and relax – you deserve life’s best.

When I was just a pup I used to marvel at your weather reporting. I would practice writing backwards. Up until I was in my early twenties, I was planning on being your replacement when the time came for you to retire. I graduated from the University of Waterloo with a BES and planning on taking meteorology in school in Ottawa. Life commitments prevented me from continuing my studies with no regrets. However, I see it would all have been in vain. I am approaching retirement and would only now get my opportunity to take your place.
What a great career you had. I wish you all the best in your retirement.

Do you remember...in 1962, the Channel 9 bowling league? Carol McNutt introduced me to the gang at the channel 9 bowling alley at Knob Hill. In my recollection, you wore a crummy looking rope instead of a belt which intrigued me so much I had to undo it every time you got up to bowl. You would say, "BEAUTIE!!! Do it again!"
That year, I managed to surpass your beautfiul bowling with my high ladies single score of 250! Annis Stukus presented me with a Toronto Maple Leaf hockey puck award along with my high ladies single trophy which I still treasure - it sits on my bar. Come over any time to see it.

Congratulations on your retirement. I am almost 45 years old, and I grew up in Oshawa. At 6 pm everynight, since I was a little girl I watched the news on CFTO, channel 9, with my parents. Seven years ago I moved to Napanee, between Belleville and Kingston, and lucky for me TV's technology has changed, and I could still watch Dave Devall and CTV news, by satellite TV. Everyone here in Napanee has a chuckle at me, because I am so fond of my CTV news and all the news people! When "they" say an Organization is made up of people, and the people make it successful, then Dave Devall is the perfect example of this. It is because of Dave Devall, his co-workers, and CTV news crew that I love my news and watch it everyday! Enjoy your new adventures in retirement, and I look forward to your visits back. I came to Toronto almost 10 years ago and bought my first TV after about 6 months of my coming to this great city. At that time, I did not have any cable connection and I could watch only a few channels. I did have a choice for watching news and out of all the 3-4 channels I chose CTV as my news provider. Since then I have been religiously watching CTV news and my news would end after your gave your weather forecast. I used to commute long distance and sometimes used to reach home after 6:10 and as soon as I would reach home I would sit down (my husband of course already used to watch CTV)and wait for you to come with your weather forecast. For me weather forecast is synonymous with Dave Dewall. We wish you happy retirement although we will miss listening to your very clear and 95% appropriate forecast.
