Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory's dreams of political resurrection have been crushed. He lost the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock byelection but won't talk about his future just yet.

"I'm very disappointed in the results of the election, as we all are, but the voters can never be wrong in what they decide, and I respect their decision,"  Tory told supporters in Lindsay late on Thursday.

"As for me, I will have more to say about my plans tomorrow. For now, I will only say that I gave this campaign my very best."

Tory has a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday.

Unofficial results have Liberal candidate Rick Johnson defeating Tory 43.7 per cent to 41.2 per cent, with all 258 polls reporting.

Johnson's lead had widened since early results had Tory narrowly ahead. Johnson won by slightly more than 900 votes, 15,482 to 14,576.

In 2007, as a general election candidate, Johnson only took 29.4 per cent of the vote against his Progressive Conservative opponent Laurie Scott, who gave up her seat so Tory could run. Tory repeatedly thanked her in his concession speech.

Had Tory won, he would have been able to return to Queen's Park to lead his party in opposition to the Liberal government of Premier Dalton McGuinty.

By losing, as he did in the 2007 provincial election to Education Minister Kathleen Wynne in his native Don Valley West constituency in Toronto, most pundits think he will have no choice but to resign as party leader.

"It's a very important day for me, I won't deny that. And obviously we're hoping that we can do well, and I can get into the legislature and put my business experience to work on jobs, on the economy, getting some doctors," Tory told reporters on Thursday afternoon.

Tory had won a March 2005 byelection in Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey northwest of Toronto, but gave that seat up because he promised to run in an urban riding in a general election. Since the October 2007 loss, he has tried to lead his party from outside the legislature.

Nice day for voting

For those 89,160 eligible voters who chose to go to the polls, weather was not an obstacle. Afternoon temperatures were 2 degrees Celsius in Lindsay, the constituency's largest community.

Tory wasn't be able to vote for himself, as he doesn't live in the riding. Former MPP Scott, who stepped down in January to make way for her leader, was eligible to vote.

Johnson, who chairs the local school board, has lived in the riding for 22 years. He lost to Scott by 10,000 votes in 2007. Scott also won about 10,000 more votes than Tory did in Thursday's byelection.

Both McGuinty and Wynne have been in the area campaigning for Johnson.

"You know what? It's an election. We'll see what happens. I'm hopeful, but we'll see," Johnson told reporters on Thursday afternoon.

Other major party candidates were the NDP's Lyn Edwards and the Green Party's Mike Schreiner. However, neither candidate broke out of single-digit support. A total of nine candidates ran.

The Conservatives had held the seat since 1994, although of the eight surrounding constituencies, the Liberals and Tories each hold four.

Most analysts had thought Tory would win, but with a narrower margin of victory than 2007.

"I don't know. I've never been so undecided in my life. And I probably will be until I walk in there (the voting booth)," said Lindsay resident Howard Smith on Thursday. "I can't think of any election ever that I keep see-sawing so much on."

While some liked the idea of having the opposition leader as MPP, others had wondered about having a parachute candidate with no real roots in the riding.

As a former resident of Haliburton, I feel that Tory is only using/abusing this opportunity to get a seat. They need someone (preferably) local with the concerns of the citizens of the Haliburton area in mind.
Vive la resignation!

I find this election very upsetting. Mr. Tory unable to get elected in his own riding is now trying anything he can to get a seat in Parliament. I voted for Laurie Scott because her father had well represented our area and I trusted her to do the same. I live in Brock Township, which is part of Durham Region, the only thing we really get from Durham Region is a tax bill.
I feel very betrayed by Ms Scott.
To help make my decision on who I will vote for is if they actually campaign my area. I'm a business owner in our small town and if they can't be bothered to come to my store, shake my hand and talk to me.. I can't get all excited to vote for him or her.
I know Mr. Tory was in my town a couple of times even saw him on the opposite side of the street, and eating in one of our local eating establishments but never came in my store.
The NDP canidate was just as bad I saw her look in our door and then continue on.
At least the Liberal, Green and Independent Representatives came in my door to talk to me.
So who will I vote for, not anyone who didn't have the time to come and talk to me.

John Tory should have stepped down after he lost the last election. If he wins this by-election all he will accomplish is to hand over another term to Dalton McGuinty and that is sad. Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock needs Chris Hodgson to come back. He could easily fill both Laurie's seat and that of the party leader and kick Dalton to the curb at the first opportunity. I live in the area and feel very betrayed by Ms Scott. I hope she realizes her career in politics is over. Tory didn't get my vote today nor will she should she seek re-election.

Speak for yourself GTA boy. I'd welcome back Mike Harris in a second compared to what McGuinty has done to the province.

Lost jobs, higher taxes, more pollution from those coal plants he promised to close down. $18 billion deficit over the next two years. Teacher strikes. But hey, he has accomplished a few things, such as banning pitbulls. That is doing so much to help the economy.

b) he's a Tory, so his brain is hardwired to screw up
c) his views on school funding were so out of line that no one will trust him again.
d) he was parachuted in and we don't like that.

To "GTA Boy with Brains"

I think you have everything but brains. You should pull you head out of your back-side before you start attacking McGuinty and instead praise Mike Harris.

Teacher strikes - that wouldnt be because Mike Harris and his government failed the entire education system would it? Those teachers must love the standardized testing they have to administer, not to mention their own reviews and tests that they are now forced into. Oh, and of course the billions in spending cuts in order to balance the budget. Just incase you need to be reminded, the Ontario teachers largest walkout in history was in 1997 - wasn't that when he was in power? hmm.....

Lost jobs? Yes - that would have nothing to do with Ontario's dependence on manufacturing jobs in the 21st century right? (which is a joke) That must be the fault of the government who has only been in power since 2003.

The coal plants Mike Harris did nothing about at all - at least Dalton made broken promises..better late than never :)

And Mike Harris was such an angel - he just loved those aboriginal folks in the Ipperwas Affair.

Yes - we all would just love to see him come back. Is a public lashing involved?? :)

Get over yourself champ.

John Tory is too left wing to be a Conservative. He should have been removed as party leader long ago. Many Conservatives withheld their votes in the last two elections because of John Tory's liberal, left-wing stand on many key issues. We need a real Conservative leading the party at the next election, otherwise we will see McGuilty re-elected once again. John Tory as Conservative party leader is the best thing that ever happened to McGuilty and the liberal party. I will never vote Conservative as long as John Tory is the party leader.

Accepting a large raise and better job to step aside for a easy victory looks very good on the both of them! I know that the riding is simply disappointed in general.
I voted this evening and at 8:30pm this evening, in a poll area of 564 people, I was the 150th voter. Very sad in general, but very happy he did not come out a winner!

The knives are out already and were indeed during the by-election campaign.

The Tories having held the seat since 1994 and John Tory's loss means backstabbers in that riding who normally vote PC decided they want yet another divisive leadership race.

John Tory has done a good job but far right forces within his party have never accepted him as leader.

I hope that Tory stays but if he chooses to resign who then is waiting in the wings? Are Ontario PCs going to have to hold a coronation for Jim Flaherty?

That might be a preferable alternative to handing the job to Tony Clement.

I really do not like McGuinty, but Tory's misadventures on the road trip to Queen's Park is a disgusting display of what is wrong with politics.

When I cast my vote, I vote for the single person most likely to share my views and concerns. Why the hell would I vote for someone who doesn't even live in my area?

Tory, you lost the election with your insane religious schools crap and handed McGuinty another mandate. So dismal was your performance that you couldn't even win your own riding. But rather than exit gracfully, you wandered around the building until you found a way to slither in.
Luckily, the voters of Haliburton don't like snakes from out of town.

The PC's in Ontario are as dead-in-the-water as the Liberals are in Alberta. First, I'm certainly no staunch PC supporter. But I must say that apart of me will be saddened by Mr. Tory's departure from Ontario politics. While John Tory was never much of a small "c" conservative, this quality is what made him so attractive to moderate voters in Ontario.

In fact, his leadership style was grounded in political pragmatism. I think this was an important quality that he inherited from his mentor Bill Davis.

I must say, I find it quite ironic that some people say they'd take Premier Harris over Premier McGunity any day. Are we really using Mike Harris' leadership as normative criteria?

After all, it was Mr. Davis' PCs that constituted the longest serving dynasty in Canadian history- 42 years.
What we learned from Mr. Davis and PC predecessors' success was that Ontarians look for non-ideological, pragmatic, cautious leadership. In effect, radical, ideological leaders do not remain on the political scene for very long. If you don't believe me, just ask Mr. Rae or Mr. Harris.

Perhaps what is most tragic about Mr. Tory's departure is that his party will shift to the right and select Tim Hudak as their next leader(just as they did with Frank Miller after Davis retired). This has got Common Sense Revolution and trust me, the Ontario electorate will not bite, I can promise you that.

I was living in Ontario during the 2007 election. Tory's loss in this by-election is about something that none of us are willing to talk about.

Plain old Racism, period!

The Mcginty Liberals used "Denominational Schools", during the General Election, to tap into an antipathy toward Muslims and other cultural groups that runs rampant in "safe" Tory seats; where people are worried about paying for the education of a multitude of ethinic and religious groups.

The Liberals should be ashamed! As should the New Democrats, who stayed silent on the issue during the General Election.

I am defintely not a PC supporter, but progress should never be held back by racism.

The guy has a huge majority in the legislature yet still didn't want Tory in.Maybe he was afraid of Tory being more than capable of taking him to task over the appalling way he has been handling the economy.
I am dissapointed by the result's as voter's could not see past Laurie Scott giving up her seat and see the big picture. It would have been good to see Tory in the legislature bringing Mcguinty to account for his poor performance. It would have been better to have a future premier to have regained his position from our riding. Now all we have is another Liberal they'll have to find a seat in the opposition bench's to fill.
Now we have even less say in a government where there is only one voice.$18 billion deficit over two year's and counting we'll just have to suck it up.

Me thinks Mr. Tory should have stepped down as leader of the Ontario Conservatives after the last provincial election. I'm convinced that it was an election that was his to lose, and lose it he did!

I generally vote Conservative but with his wild suggestions of funding all religious schools I gagged and ran for the trenches screaming for all to hear "What in the name of Allah is this man doing?". So, for the first time in my life I chose to vote with a spoiled ballot.

Any astute political leader would have, or at least should have, know that this funding proposal in itself would be akin to committing political suicide and based on the results of the following provincial election that is exactly what it did, both for himself and indirectly for many hopeful, qualified Conservative candidates.

Now, Mr. Tory can add yet another election loss to his list of credits. If he doesn't get the hint being provided by the electorate on the occasion of this byelection, and voluntarily move on, someone in the Conservative Party should take him aside and spell it out for him.

It's time to go Mr. Tory, farewell, adieu and don't let the door wack you in the backside on your way out!

When people want liberals they vote Liberal or NDP, not for "soft shell" Tories!

Now its time for Ontario PC to bring forth a new Mike Harris type like Tim Hudak.

The PCs need a candidate who is prepared to undo the Liberal/NDP government that exists in Queen's Park now. Someone to reverse the nearly 15-20 province-wide bans enacted by McGuinty which aount to property conversion by the government.

New common sense labour law has to be enacted so that you don't have people striking and holding the public hostage in a time when people can ill afford the hold ups and the cruelty that comes with strinking, secured workers during a recession.

You might not have gotten this from John "Toronto" Tory and when Ontarians are sick of unemployment, high crime and unreasonable unions, they'll be looking for a clear alternative to McGuinty.
