KITCHENER, Ont. - A woman who ignored warnings not to drive while impaired was given a 30-month prison sentence for killing a friend after crashing into a hydro pole.

Katherine Walpole lost control of her car in Cambridge on Nov. 23, 2007 and crashed into a utility pole, killing her passenger, Kevin Block, 21.

The two had been drinking for more than three hours at a restaurant and bar in Kitchener.

Bar staff had offered to call a cab, threatened to call police and, even ran to Walpole's car at a red light in an attempt to stop her.

Moments later, just a kilometre away, Walpole crashed her car and was found to have almost three times the legal limit of alcohol in her blood.

Walpole, who is 24, will not be allowed to drive for eight years after her release from prison.
