Peel police have found human remains in an open field by a highway in north Brampton.

A person who was walking in the area just east of Highway 410 and south of Countryside Drive made the discovery Monday afternoon and called police.

Authorities have confirmed the remains are indeed human but have not been able to establish the person's identity, gender or age.

Forensic experts are investigating the remains, Peel police spokesperson Const. Marlene Murphy told ctvtoronto.ca on Tuesday.

Homicide investigators have been assigned to the case.

"Until we can determine who this person is and the circumstances, we will consider the case suspicious," she said.

She said police are not clear how long the remains have been at the site.

"We are relying heavily on the expertise of forensic experts," she said.

Murphy said she doesn't know how long it will take experts to determine the person's identity.

"It varies with every case," she said.
