Police say that a Toronto adult learning school was never in danger, and that the report of gunmen inside the building was not true.

Instead, it was an emergency drill that not everyone in the school knew about, police said early Thursday afternoon.

"It was an emergency drill that was not communicated to everyone within the school," Const. Wendy Drummond told reporters at the scene.

"That information as to what was taking place was then communicated outside the building and then to police."

Police had been on scene at the Bickford Centre, located near Bloor and Christie Streets, since before 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Officers from 14 Division, as well as the Emergency Task Force, were dispatched to the scene.

The area was blocked off and the school was placed into lockdown.
