Downtown cyclists will soon be able to park their bikes in a newly opened facility at Union Station, the City of Toronto announced Tuesday.

Mayor David Miller officially opened the secure, indoor bicycle station on Tuesday, which he said "builds on the City's commitment to ensure a sustainable transportation system in Toronto."

The mayor said the bicycle station will make it easier for cyclists to make their way to other parts of the public transit system.

It is located in the York West Teamway - the enclosed pedestrian walkway on the west side of York Street, south of Front Street.

Parking costs $2 per day for non-members, while members will pay a separate monthly fee and have 24-hour access to the bicycle station. (Non-members can only access the bicycle station between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.)

All parking is available on a first come, first serve basis and cyclists are required to use their own locks when parking their bikes at the station.

Miller also said "the creation of this bicycle station will help us toward our goal of doubling the number of bicycle trips made in the city as a percentage of total trips by 2011."

The city intends to build another bicycle station at Nathan Phillips Square in the future.
