A four-alarm fire tore through the attic of several row homes located north of Kensington Market late Tuesday afternoon.

Toronto Fire Services was called to a multiple-unit fire on Major Street just after 4 p.m.

Around 5 p.m., Division Commander Lorne Buckingham told reporters that the fire took hold in four adjacent row houses that share a common attic on Major Street, west of the College Street and Spadina Avenue intersection.

Buckingham said firefighters managed to stop the spread of the fire before it damaged an adjacent fifth row house.

Toronto Fire Services was able to respond to the blaze quickly, he said.

He estimated that the affected row houses were about 100 years old.

No residents were injured as a result of the fire, though one firefighter injured his shoulder while working on the fire, Buckingham said.

Around 6:45 p.m., Capt. Mike Strapko told ctvtoronto.ca that the fire had involved the five adjacent houses between 19 Major St. and 27 Major St.

He said 90 firefighters were involved in bringing the blaze under control.

Strapko said that the estimated damages to the residences were not yet available.

Streetcar diverted

As a result of the fire, the College streetcar is being diverted. The TTC told ctvtoronto.ca the eastbound car is being diverted via Ossington, across Dundas, and up to Spadina.

The westbound car is being diverted along Bay, then across Dundas, down Ossington, before going back en route.

The TTC is advising any commuters to walk up to Dundas and take the Dundas streetcar to avoid the situation altogether.
