The parents of a missing York University student have uncovered video footage that could give police a clue about what happened to their son the night he disappeared.

Shane Fair's family and friends have been taking an active role in the investigation by going to businesses in the area, to ask for surveillance footage that may have captured the missing teen on the night of May 16.

Footage retrieved from a surveillance camera near the Westin Harbour castle captures a man walking east. A short time later a car driving west makes a sudden u-turn and is last seen driving east in the same direction as the man.

The footage is poor quality and it's difficult to determine if the man in the video is indeed Fair.

The teen's friends believe he walked home from a school formal at Ontario Place after missing the chartered bus back to York. Fair's mother lives in the Beaches neighbourhood and those close to the teen say it's not unlike him to make the trek on foot. However, on May 16 he never made it home. He was last seen at the formal.

"We felt strongly that he would take a route that he's walked many times, bicycled all the time, along that route," family friend and neighbour Chris Da Silva told CTV Toronto while going over the footage.

Fair's mother Lisa Malo said she's optimistic the video shows her son.

"The timeline is right, the description of what he's wearing is right and it makes sense for him to be walking east towards the house," she said.

She has given a copy of the footage to police.

In the meantime, another search is being organized by Fair's family on Sunday.

Police called off their ground search for the teen on Friday.
