A body pulled from Lake Ontario Saturday has been confirmed as that of missing York University student Shane Fair.

Toronto police located the body just west of Ontario Place Saturday afternoon, Staff Sgt. Mike Stones told ctvtoronto.ca on Sunday morning.

Stones confirmed that Fair's family has been notified.

Fair, 19, was last seen on May 16, when he attended a school formal at the Atlantis Pavilions at Ontario Place.

Fair's friends initially believed he tried to walk to his mother's home in the Beach neighbourhood after missing the last bus back to campus. However, he never made it there, nor did he turn up at campus.

Stones said investigators cannot yet say what happened to Fair after he left the formal or how he ended up in the water.

The young man's family had held out hope that their son would be found alive, and yesterday released a surveillance video that showed a man walking eastward near the Westin Harbour Castle hotel.

The footage was grainy and the family could not say for sure if it was indeed Fair.

Fair was a reserve soldier with the Canadian Armed Forces. He was to begin a training course next week.
