A black bear is back in the wild after spending an eventful morning strolling through backyards and climbing up a tree in the town of Aurora.

Animal control officials, York region police officers and firefighters waited patiently until the animal climbed down from the tree on his own. He climbed down just after 10 a.m. after sitting in the tree for more than two hours.

The bear was prodded with a stick and given a sleep tranquilizer to help coax him down from the tree.

The bear was first spotted wandering through the heart of Aurora at around 6 a.m. where he came dangerously close to a GO Station in the area.

Several residents spotted him in their backyards in an area around Yonge and Wellington Streets.

No one was injured in the incident.

Animal control officials say the bear could have travelled from the north side of Lake Simcoe.
