An OPP officer in Elgin County is dead and another injured following a collision there between their cruiser and an asphalt truck.

The incident occurred at 1:20 p.m. Monday on the Furnival Road at the Thomson Line, which is about five kilometres south of Highway 401 between Chatham and London.

Paramedics took the injured officers to hospital in Newbury, the OPP said Monday in a news release.

One officer died there. The other officer was airlifted to the London Health Sciences, Victoria Hospital. He is said to be in serious condition.

The driver of the asphalt truck was uninjured.

The OPP's technical traffic collision investigators are working to help determine how the accident occurred.

"Obviously, officers were involved, and we want to make sure a thorough investigation is completed," OPP Const. Aaron McPhail told reporters.

The OPP said the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified. That civilian agency reviews cases where the interaction of police and civilians has resulted in serious injury or death.
