Two men have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the beating death of a young Sri Lankan man in Toronto's east-end last week.

Annushath Indrakanthan, 19, was swarmed and attacked at a small plaza near Birchmount Road and Sheppard Avenue East on July 20. As many as five attackers clubbed him with weapons -- including a hammer and an edged tool.

Police said they responded to a call on July 20 just after noon, and found a wounded Indrakanthan. He was rushed to hospital but died later from stab wounds.

On Thursday morning, 21-year-old Vikas Dahiya of Toronto and 19-year-old Antrikh Singh of Markham appeared in court. Each was charged with first-degree murder.

Dahiya was arrested on Tuesday morning, and Singh a day later.

Indrakanthan's death is Toronto's 30th homicide of the year, and the second swarming death of a Sri Lankan man in the city in less than two weeks.

A few kilometers from where Indrakanthan was attacked, another young Sri Lankan man was swarmed and killed on July 11.

Kristian Thanapalan, 22, whose parents are originally from Sri Lanka, was killed by a group of Tamil men in that incident. He was beaten with cricket and baseball bats near Kennedy Road and Highway 401.

No arrests have been made in connection with Thanapalan's murder, and police say they haven't found any evidence that would link the two murders.
