A 25-year-old tourist is dead after he was shot outside a Toronto hotel is one of the city's ritziest neighbourhoods.

The Quebec resident was shot at around 4:30 a.m. in the laneway behind the Howard Johnson hotel, located on Avenue Road just north of Bloor Street in the posh Yorkville district.

He was rushed to hospital but later died of his injuries. He is Toronto's 32nd homicide victim of the year.

A 29-year-old man, who is also from Quebec, was also shot during the incident but he is recovering from non life-threatening injuries, Toronto police Staff Sgt. David Vickers told ctvtoronto.ca.

He said police are not publicly identifying the victims.

Police spent Saturday at the scene collecting evidence. Shell casings were scattered across the laneway which connects the hotel to a parking lot.

Authorities also spoke to witnesses in an effort to gather information on possible suspects. No suspects are currently in custody.

About 300 police officers were in the area because of the influx of people who have crowded downtown Toronto this weekend for Caribana festivities.

Police said they are still trying to determine if the men were guests of the hotel and why they were in town. Authorities said there is no evidence connecting the crime to Caribana.
