Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a homicide after a body was discovered on a beach near Algonquin Provincial Park.

OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae says although a homicide in the area would be extremely rare, police suspect foul play was involved after the body turned up near Bancroft, just south of Algonquin.

There are signs of apparent trauma on the body, which was discovered around 2 a.m. Saturday on a beach at Papineau Lake.

Police were on scene to investigate a separate incident when they found the remains on the beach.

Rae says police do not believe the body washed ashore from elsewhere.

Police are investigating at the scene, but have not yet determined the age or sex of the adult body.

Rae says in her nine years working in the Eastern region OPP she cannot recall another homicide in the Bancroft area.
