A Toronto man who was shot in the chest overnight is expected to survive after undergoing a life-saving surgery Wednesday morning.

The 22 year old was rushed to hospital in critical condition but police say the man is now expected to live.

The shooting took place just after 2 a.m. on Dixington Crescent, near a basketball court located near a townhouse complex in the Islington and Dixon Avenues area.

The wounded man staggered home but was then dropped off at Humber River Regional Hospital. His condition took a turn for the worse and medical officials decided to rush him to Sunnybrook hospital after deeming his injuries life threatening. He arrived at Sunnybrook at around 4 a.m.

Police were at the scene overnight collecting evidence and spent the morning speaking to people who live in the neighbourhood. No suspects have been taken into custody.

There are security cameras in the area but police would not say if they have accessed any surveillance footage.
