Toronto police have arrested and charged a man with the murder of a young woman, whose body was found Saturday in a downtown apartment.

Police were called to a high-rise apartment building in the Wellesley Street East and Sherbourne Street area just after 12:30 a.m. for unknown trouble.

When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from obvious signs of trauma. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a Toronto Police news release, the victim has been identified as 26-year-old Spring Phillips.

"The suspect and the victim, as far as we know, were casual acquaintances," said Det.-Sgt. Hank Idsinga on Sunday.

Police say Phillips was letting the suspect stay overnight.

Security cameras in the building recorded the suspect getting into an elevator, exiting the building and picking up a cigarette butt on the ground.

The death is the city's 56th homicide of 2009.

Levi Samuel Aggek, 33, of no fixed address has been charged with second-degree murder.

He was arrested at a local shelter, The Scott Mission at College and Spadina. He arrived in Toronto from Newfoundland three months ago.
