A Toronto man who was killed Tuesday morning while crossing a busy intersection may have been the victim of a double hit-and-run, according to police.

Investigators said they have spoken to a woman who said she was behind the wheel when the accident occurred at the intersection of Keele Street and Finch Avenue but panicked and left the scene.

Const. Hugh Smith told CTV News that investigators inspected her vehicle in order to verify her story but found that the damage was not entirely consistent with the injuries sustained by the victim.

Smith said they now believe the pedestrian -- believed to be in his 60s -- was first struck at around 5:45 a.m. The vehicle that struck him left the scene and left the man lying on the road where he could not be seen by traffic. He was then struck by a second vehicle.

Police say it appears the female caller was the driver of the second car.

Witnesses told police they found the man lying on the ground and saw a dark-coloured car leave the scene.

Authorities will remain at the scene throughout the morning in an effort to gather evidence. Police have closed the intersection to traffic in all directions as the investigation continues. The area is not expected to reopen before noon.

Investigators are still looking for witnesses. Anyone with information is being asked to call police at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
