A Toronto man has been arrested and charged with murder after police discovered his mother's lifeless body inside her west-end apartment building.
Toronto police say officers on patrol noticed something suspicious about a man who was walking along Lakeshore Boulevard near Windermere Avenue just before midnight Monday.
After speaking with the man, police went to a seventh-floor apartment in a building on Dundas Street West near Scarlett Road. Once inside, they found the woman's body.
There are reports Antonia Catherine Zammit, 62, had been stabbed to death. A post-mortem examination will be held later today to determine the official cause of death, police said.
Neighbours told CTV News that a mother and son lived inside the apartment where the woman was found. They reported seeing a man outside the apartment covered in blood.
They described Zammit as someone who was always very friendly but not very outgoing.
"She always kept to herself and was reserved but she would always say hi," said a male neighbour.
Zammit worked as a personal care worker and regularly attended mass at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Dundas Street West.
John Boukhalfa, 26, faces a second-degree murder charge. He was expected to make an appearance in court Tuesday morning.
In a sad coincidence, homicide victim Adrian Johnston lived in the same building. He was gunned down in a nearby field back in May.
