A 27-year-old man is expected to survive after being shot in the head early Tuesday morning in Toronto's Junction neighbourhood.

The man was shot while on Edwin Avenue at Dupont Street, just east of Dundas Street West, at around 12:30 a.m.

Police say the bullet hit the man in the forehead but inflicted non life-threatening injuries. He spent the night in hospital having surgery.

Several witnesses were in the area when the shooting occurred. They told police that a dispute started between the victim and a suspect. Police say they are trying to determine what started the fight and if the suspect and victim knew each other beforehand.

The suspect was last seen running northbound from the scene.

Authorities say they will gather surveillance footage taken from security cameras in the area in hopes of getting a clear image of the suspect.
